Viet Nam News PANAMA CITY — Pope Francis celebrated mass with hundreds of thousands of young pilgrims in Panama on Sunday, winding up a five-day visit during which he defended Central American migrants and acknowledged the Church had been hurt by sex abuse scandals. Before flying out of Panama, the first Latin American pope called for a "just and peaceful solution" to the crisis wracking Venezuela and made a plea for peace in neighbouring Colombia hit by "terrorist hatred." Shortly before leaving for Rome after a five-day visit for World Youth Day celebrations, the pope said the people of Venezuela were facing "a serious situation" but that he was praying for an outcome "respecting human rights". Francis has been at pains not to take sides on the issue, even though the Church in Venezuela has been highly critical of President Nicolas Maduro’s regime amid the country’s economic collapse. Speaking quietly during his weekly Angelus address, the pope also said he … [Read more...] about Pope winds up World Youth Day events in Panama with giant mass

Football victories show us what we’re missing as a society
Researcher Nguyen Khac Giang It was a Saturday evening. Across all big cities of Vietnam, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to celebrate the AFF Cup victory of the Vietnamese men’s football team. I was one of them. To be exact, I was stuck in the crowd and could not make it home after the match ended at the My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi. And it was that evening that I witnessed something I haven’t seen before: people in an urban area treating each other with understanding and kindness. Two luxury cars got into a fender bender, and what happened next was that the two drivers opened their windows, happily shook hands and kept driving. Those on motorbikes drove slowly, waving flags, shouting "Vietnam is champion" with big smiles on their faces, a scene completely different from what I usually see on the streets of Hanoi, when people keep beeping the horns and driving as fast as they can. That an event can attract many to the streets is an … [Read more...] about Football victories show us what we’re missing as a society

Twitter won’t block world leaders, citing need for discourse
Twitter announced Friday it would not block the accounts of world leaders even if their statements are "controversial," citing a need to promote a "public conversation" on political issues. The announcement came just days after a tweet from President Donald Trump hinting at the use of U.S. nuclear weapons sparked criticism that the social network was allowing threats of violence. "Twitter is here to serve and help advance the global, public conversation. Elected world leaders play a critical role in that conversation because of their outsized impact on our society," the California-based company said in a blog post. "Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial tweets would hide important information people should be able to see and debate. It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions." Twitter made no specific reference to Trump or his tweet this week saying he has a "nuclear button" … [Read more...] about Twitter won’t block world leaders, citing need for discourse
