A piece of traditional clothing often takes several months to complete. Diep Thi Vong from Vinh Phuc province is one of a few San Diu women keeping the tradition of making her own clothes and teaches the younger generation how to weave and embroider. “My grandmother and mother used to make their own clothes. They taught me and even sent me to a weaving class to learn how to make San Diu traditional clothes. A San Diu woman was required to make what she wore on her first day of marriage,” Mrs. Vong said. San Diu women often layer their clothes — a traditional white top inside and an indigo black light jacket outside. Young women secure their jacket with a green or red belt, right side over left while older women do it the other way around. Thick haze showcases worsening Hanoi air pollution
The haze affected visibility so badly that vehicles on the Thang Long Highway had to turn on their headlights at 7:30 a.m. At 8 a.m. the capital's Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at above 200 in eight of 11 air monitoring stations in different parts of the city. The level means children, seniors and individuals with heart or lung problems should stay indoors. Saturday is the fifth day in a row that the capital's air quality has stayed well above 200, sparking public concerns over its health implications. High-rise buildings in Hanoi could be barely seen through the haze on Saturday morning. Visibility remained low in many areas of the capital city. In Ha Dong District, vision was less than 100m and in the Ha Nam area 200m. IQAir AirVisual, a Switzerland-based air quality monitoring facility that generates data from public, ground-based and real-time monitoring stations, recorded Hanoi's AQI level at 271 on Saturday morning, making it the most polluted city in the world. … [Read more...] about Thick haze showcases worsening Hanoi air pollution
Naked truth: Hanoi to hold first exhibition of nude pics
An exhibition that aims to get people to think differently about nude art will open next month in the capital city. The exhibition, held July 23-30 at the 29 Hang Bai Art Gallery, will feature more than 50 carefully selected works of 10 contemporary fine art photographers. Organizers said only people over 18 years of age will be allowed to attend the exhibition. Visitors will have to have ID proof of their age, they added. The organizers are also taking care not to ruffle any conservative feathers or generate any controversy by asking the photographers to ensure that there are no legal problems with showing the face of the models involved, as also with the agreement between the photographers and their subjects about showing the works to the public. The event is being seen as a positive development for the photography community, especially those focusing on nudes. Public mention of subjects like sex and nudity have tended to trigger anger and accusations of decadence. Organizers are … [Read more...] about Naked truth: Hanoi to hold first exhibition of nude pics
