The Hanoitimes - The booming of solar farms has left the national power grid overloaded. The mushrooming of solar power projects in Vietnam over the past few years has caused an overload on the electrical grid, putting many developers in a dilemma. Illustrative photo The number of solar farms soared from one in 2015, three in 2018, five in March 2019 to 82 as of June 30, 2019 (the deadline which developers were allowed to benefit Feed-in-Tariff regime of US cent 9.35/kWh in 20 years) has drawn the proliferation of this kind of renewable energy in the country which has attempted to reduce coal-fired power. In terms of capacity, the current registered solar capacity has hit more than 7,000 MW compared to 850 MW outlined by 2020 in the Power Master Plan (Planning VII). The Doanh Nhan Sai Gon newspaper quoted an EVN official as saying that the overload had become more visible after a decree on sample power purchase agreement (PPA) took effect in … [Read more...] about Paradox shadows Vietnam solar power planning after deadline of FiT

Sao Mai solar power plant in An Giang province (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam is among top three nations leading the shift to renewable energy in Asia Pacific , according to the latest research from IHS Markit . Reporting on the IHS Markit’s Renewable Additions Index , the site energyvoice.com said the renewable power development pipeline has soared across the region. According to the index, Australia leads the index with 89 percent of capacity under construction being either wind, solar or biomass power, followed by Japan. The third place in the region is taken by Vietnam, which leads emerging markets, as the country promoted feed-in tariffs to attract investment in solar and wind power. The index showed that around a third of the power projects being built — or about 80 gigawatts (GW) — are set to generate wind, solar, hydro and other types of renewable power across 16 key regional markets. “Our ranking shows that income level is not the sole … [Read more...] about Vietnam among top three leading nations in renewable energy shift in Asia Pacific

HCM City to relocate water supply sources amid worsening water pollution HCM City authorities plan to gradually relocate its water supply sources further upstream of the Sài Gòn and Đồng Nai rivers as part of its effort to ensure clean water for local use. Experts have warned that the current main source of water has become seriously polluted due to the impact of socio-economic development along the Sài Gòn – Đồng Nai river system. The city currently draws some 94 per cent of the water for treatment at a spot downstream of where the Sài Gòn River meets the Đồng Nai River, at the Hòa Phú pumping station in its Củ Chi District, and at Hóa An in Đồng Nai Province. Under the city’s 2020-30 water supply plan, the city will relocate the Hòa Phú pumping station to a new location, about 20 km from the existing pumping … [Read more...] about VIETNAM NEWS FEBRUARY 8

Logistics sector to step up digital transformation Logistics, considered a backbone of Vietnam’s economy, is among eight sectors prioritised by the national programme for digital transformation until 2025. According to the Vietnam Logistics Business Association (VLA), the sector has grown 14-16 percent annually over recent years. It now gathers together some 3,000 domestic firms and 30 others offering transnational services. Of those, 89 percent are domestic businesses and 10 percent are joint ventures while the number of foreign-funded companies represents just 1 percent of the total. The VLA said the cost of logistics in Vietnam as a proportion of GDP is 18 percent, compared to 9-14 percent in developed countries. The high cost is attributable to limited sea port infrastructure and weak cost reduction efforts. Together with fierce competition, the digital economic boom, and pressure from the COVID-19 pandemic, these have made digitisation in the sector a must. … [Read more...] about VIETNAM BUSINESS NEWS FEB. 18
