2017 was a successful year for the Vietnamese economy. All 13 socioeconomic development targets set forth by the National Assembly have been reached or even exceeded. The economy has been growing well at an estimated 6.7 per cent.On the other hand, the quality of growth is becoming an issue as the country has been dependent on investment capital, low-cost labour and natural resources mining. That growth model is no longer appropriate in the current context, as the global and domestic situation has changed.Especially, Industry 4.0 has come and opened up many opportunities and challenges for the economy.“Against this background, the economy cannot develop quickly and sustainably to improve living standards and narrow the development gap with other countries. Leveraging productivity is the key of sustainable growth, this is one of the core issues for the Vietnamese economy today," confirmed Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of Planning and Investment, at VDF 2017.Acknowledging the … [Read more...] about Leveraging productivity is key for sustainable growth

Vietnam’s first ever Rice Festival was held in the southern province of Hau Giang to promote the country’s rice industry. The festival helped the State and the general public to get a better understanding of how rice is grown and traded. However, the best award for rice growers is to help them escape from poverty.Dealing with food security is essential for Vietnam during its economic renewal process. Throughout the regional and global economic crisis, rice production helped to balance out economic growth and stabilise the country. Since 2003, Vietnam has been the second biggest rice exporter in the world and is expected to export around 6 million tonnes of rice this year alone. However, rice farmers are the poorest people in society. The Mekong Delta region, which plays a key role in ensuring the nation’s food security, is one of the country’s poorest regions. This is something of paradox. Therefore, the most practical and significant move is to improve rice … [Read more...] about Helping farmers become well off is the best reward for them

This statement comes from Deputy Chief Inspector of Government Tran Duc Luong in a press conference on asset and income transparency, and anti-corruption in Vietnam on the sideline of the workshop on “Vietnam Anti-corruption Initiative" (VACI) recently held by the Government Inspectorate and the World Bank in Hanoi. Trinh Hai reports. What should have been made transparent in Vietnam? Vietnam’s anti-corruption policy towards 2020 advocates a maximum reduction in State secrets, technology secrets and professional secrets. However, some agencies and businesses wield the umbrella of secrets to deny providing information on their operations. But, according to the Law on Anti-corruption, State organs and businesses must make public their organisations and operations. For example, the Government Inspectorate must disclose inspection results, complaints, denunciation settlements or other activities like institutional construction, etc. Therefore, Vietnam needs to … [Read more...] about “Publicity is the best policy…”
Remarks on Vietnam in the US HumanRights Report 2009 are biased and built on inaccurate information aboutthe real situation, in the same vein as the one-sided thinkingrepeatedly used in previous reports.Although acknowledging positive changes in Vietnam, the report failedto provide a just or accurate overview and faced strong public protest, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) said in its commentary on March 15. Vietnam’s consistent policy is to respect and ensure humanrights, which it considers both the goal of development and the meanstowards it. The country has, over the recent past, reaped greatachievements in ensuring human rights in all fields--from the civil, political, and economic, to the cultural and social aspects—which haveearned recognition from the international community. At the Geneva meeting last May, the UN Human Rights Council’s WorkingGroup lauded Vietnam’s outstanding achievements, especially in povertyreduction and the implementation of the … [Read more...] about The simple truth is the best argument
Although fertiliser is in the list of price stabilisation commodities, its selling price has recently been changing day by day, even three times a day. To deal with this problem, it requires not only administrative orders by State authorities but also the balance of supply and demand, said a top official from the Ministry of Industry and Trade in a recent seminar on fertiliser price stabilisation.According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in the first quarter of 2011, besides a rise in output, prices of fertilisers also increased significantly. Specifically, urea fertiliser price climbed 18.3 percent; phosphate, 2.6 percent; NPK, 37.9 percent; and DAP fertiliser, 66.3 percent. Prices will keep risingThe main reason for the volatility of fertiliser prices since the beginning of this year is heavy reliance on imports. For example, some types of urea fertiliser are imported more than 50 percent; SA and potassium are wholly imported; and 80 percent of DAP fertiliser is made up … [Read more...] about Rising Fertiliser Price: What Is the Best Solution?
We've been successful and we are achieving successes in a number of areas, U.S. Ambassador Michael W. Michalak told DTiNews' David Cornish in a candid interview, on the occasion of celebrating the 15th anniversary of normalized relations between Vietnam and the United States. U.S. Ambassador Michael W. Michalak As far as Vietnam and the U.S. are concerned, how would you summarize where the relationship stands? Since you became ambassador in 2007, what is the most positive change you've seen in the relationship? Vietnam is the Chair for ASEAN this year, they've been invited to G20 in Canada, they are hosting the World Economic Forum on East Asia here, it appears that Vietnam and the United States are standing side by side on a number of issues, do you think that Vietnam is to become a major player on the international scene? We know that there are still MIA's in Vietnam, some people in the U.S. also have a perception that perhaps there are still some living POW's. Is there an … [Read more...] about U.S Ambassador: VN-U.S relationship is the best its ever been
Transport Minister Dinh La Thang explained to Lao Dong (Labour) why building a new airport instead of expanding the existing Tan Son Nhat Airport in HCM City makes more sense. Many people have argued that the construction of the Long Thanh Airport in Dong Nai Province is a very expensive proposition when Viet Nam's public debt has already reached $80 billion. They say upgrading the existing six airports in the south will solve the problem of overloading at the Tan Son Nhat airport. How would you respond? It is projected that from 2017 onwards, the Tan Son Nhat Airport will be overloaded because it is only designed to handle 25 million passengers a year. There was a plan to increase the airport's capacity to cater to 40-50 million passengers a year during the 2025-2030 period. I don't think this plan is feasible. The proposal to upgrade the Bien Hoa military airport and turn it into a civilian airport is not feasible either, mainly because it does not have facilities to cater to … [Read more...] about Building Long Thanh Airport is the best of all available options
