This year’s International Thalassemia Day, themed “Addressing Health Inequalities Across the Global Thalassemia Community”, is devoted to raising public awareness about Thalassemia and one of the major causes in the spread of the disease - cousin marriages, as well as the importance of pre-marriage and pre-pregnancy counselling and screenings to early detect the disease. Data shows that there are about 8,000 new-borns carrying the Thalassemia gene every year, around 2,000 of which will suffer from severe symptoms. Some 13 million Vietnamese, or 13 percent of the population, carry the gene. About 20-40 percent of the Thalassemia gene carriers are mountainous ethnic minority people, mainly due to inbreeding. Six volunteers participating in the human trials of Vietnam’s second homegrown candidate vaccine Covivac got their second shots of the vaccine on April 12. They are the first out of the total 120 volunteers in the trials to receive the second shot, which is administered 28 days after the first one. Since the start of the trials (March 15), 96 volunteers have been injected with the first shot and the remainder are expected to be inoculated by April 18. In July, a mid-term report on the vaccine's trials is planned to be done. Covivac, which was developed by the Health Ministry’s Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals, is in the first stage of clinical testing by the Hanoi Medical University’s Centre of Clinical Pharmacology. Among the new cases, there are five imported cases from India, Ukraina, Moldova, Uzbekistan, and Germany, and the remaining four Vietnamese returnees. All of them were put into isolation upon entry to undergo treatment at local hospitals.
