We all know that people in developing countries tend to have a shorter view of the future than others – a tendency to live for today and enjoy the simple things in life. People expect less and worry less, content to savour the good moments and cope with the tough deals that life brings when they pop up. In most cases they don’t have a choice but to cope because opportunities to progress up the chain aren’t available to many.We also know that children get extra special love and attention in societies where families have less. Family bonds are stronger – they have to be because everyone counts on each other to row the boat together in the same direction – that’s how they manage to survive. Families can’t afford to split apart in different directions with each seeking their own future wherever they choose – at least most families, that is.Most parents aren’t fretting over buying that next fancy pair of running shoes for their kid, or … [Read more...] about The kid-loving champion of Asia? The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has uncovered multiple issues regarding the security of passenger information following an inspection into Vietnam's top three airlines. The transport ministry ordered the inspection in October following complaints from passengers who said they had been receiving calls and text messages from taxi companies they'd never used before. A separate police investigation into the issue has also been launched following a request by national carrier Vietnam Airlines. In its report, the CAAV said some of its inspectors also received text messages from taxi companies despite using non-revenue airline employee tickets. Information from these bookings should only be accessible by airline employees, so the CAAV concluded that airline staff were responsible for leaking customer information. Travel agents were also named as a second potential source of the leaks. Some agents were found to have sold customer information to third-party companies who in turn … [Read more...] about Airline employees likely behind customer information leaks to taxi companies: Vietnam aviation authority
Dear Santa, I wonder how you manage to get into Vietnam. Do you use a visa on arrival, booked by your elves? Or did the said elves have to wait in line at a consulate, pay the money and come back two days later? And since you’re on the job, how do you get your work permit so quickly? Mind you, Santa, you can get the visa faster in Cambodia than in Malaysia. Singapore is the most expensive embassy I’ve visited so far and the Australian Consulate has the smallest waiting area. Good thing you don’t have to travel overland, Moc Bai Border Gate is suffocating in the heat with nowhere to sit while waiting and Lao Bao Border Gate is a nice walk down the hill and back again from where the bus stops. And there’s no food stalls for reindeer, poor things. I wonder if customs will try to stop you at the border for sack inspection, ask for a detailed list of goods and recommend a good broker on your behalf when you’re accused of bringing in second-hand goods. … [Read more...] about Eek!
