Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung, Nguyen Thi Van and Huynh Nhu each scored a double in the game. They put pressure on Indonesia's net right at the start, with forward Dung scoring from a freekick in the ninth minute. The score changed quickly thanks to Nguyen Thi Van's header from Dung's pass in the 15th minute. Van completed her double three minutes later when her freekick bounced off goalkeeper Norffince Boma to the net. Not long after the second half started, star striker Huynh Nhu made her first goal in this year SEA Games with her right leg and raised the score to 4-0. In the 61th minute, defender Vu Thi Thuy passed the ball to Nhu and the striker shook Indonesia's net again. Dung finished the match with the sixth goal for Vietnam when no Indonesians were there to stop her in the 85th minute. Coach Mai Duc Chung said it was an easy game for Vietnam and he had expected an even bigger win. "They fulfilled their mission of winning and earning no cards or injuries. But they missed many … [Read more...] about Vietnam women advance to SEA Games semifinals after beating Indonesia

Vietnam growth set to slow in 2020: ICAEW
The country is projected to be the fastest growing market in Southeast Asia, which as a whole, will likely see growth remain at 4.5 per cent in 2020, amid high risks of a re-escalation in trade tensions between the U.S. and China, according to the latest report by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). Regional growth has slowed since 2018’s 5.1 percent increase, with the U.S.-China trade conflict a key driver of the downturn, with trade uncertainty a key drag on manufacturing, exports and investment, the report said. The exception has been Vietnam, which has benefited from some trade diversion effects caused by the trade war. However, the ICAEW report said it suspects Chinese goods have been re-routed via Vietnam to avoid higher tariffs. Although the U.S. and China recently agreed on a ‘phase one’ deal, it is too early to celebrate. "Frictions between the two remain high and the bulk of tariffs already imposed are unlikely to be lifted … [Read more...] about Vietnam growth set to slow in 2020: ICAEW
Vietnam protests South China Sea distortion in Chinese history books
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang reiterated Thursday that Vietnam has full historical and legal basis to assert its sovereignty over the Paracel (Hoang Sa) and Spratly (Truong Sa) Islands in accordance with international law. The South China Sea is known in Vietnam as the East Sea. "The fact that China is educating its future generations with information that is contrary to historical facts and international law is not beneficial to the friendship (between Vietnam and China)," she added. Chinese newspaper Global Times reported on August 1 that China would publish new history textbooks for high school students starting next month, in which they say the South China Sea and the Senkaku Islands, currently under Japan’s control, on the East China Sea have been part of Chinese territory since ancient times. China had earlier stirred up controversy and attracted criticism over its "nine-dash line" to claim sovereignty over almost all of the South China Sea, saying it … [Read more...] about Vietnam protests South China Sea distortion in Chinese history books
Vietnam exports to US rise 28 pct as China-US trade war intensifies
The U.S. was Vietnam’s largest export market in the first five months with a value of $22.6 billion, up 28 percent year-on-year. China came second with $13.4 billion, down 2.6 percent, according to Vietnam's General Statistics Office. Vietnam was the U.S.’s 12th largest supplier last year, but if this pace of growth is sustained for a full year, it could leapfrog Italy, France, the U.K., and India in the ranks of top exporters to the U.S, Bloomberg said in a new report. The country has become a standout in a region where the world’s export engines are largely hurting amid trade-war tensions and a slowing electronics cycle, the report added. U.S. Census Bureau data shows Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan all saw export contractions in April, while in the same month Vietnam’s exports gained 7.5 percent from a year earlier. Experts have called Vietnam a "winner" of the trade war as it has received increasing investment as major … [Read more...] about Vietnam exports to US rise 28 pct as China-US trade war intensifies
