The 2020 UPU letter-writing competition was launched on December 6 at a ceremony held in Thanh Cong Secondary School in Hanoi, marking the 33rd time that such a contest has been held in Vietnam. The letters must be handwritten, no more than 800 words long and have not been published in newspapers or books. The contestants can write their letters in any language but foreign-language letters must be accompanied by their translations into Vietnamese, which is the language used for judgement. The letters are to be sent to Thieu nien Tien phong (Young Pioneers) Newspaper at 5 Hoa Ma Street, Hanoi, no later than February 25 according to the postmark date. The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has published 32 textbooks for eight subjects and experience activities, but these do not include textbooks for English. According to Tien Phong, at the workshop titled ‘Vietnam Education Publishing House and the task of renovating general education program and textbooks’, in the North, the publisher introduced four sets of sample textbooks which have been approved by the Appraisal Council. Article 5 of Circular No 33 on standards, process of compiling and editing textbooks, says that textbooks must properly and fully present the content of learning subject curricula or educational activities; and they must be basic, scientific, practical and consistent with the reality of Vietnam. Therefore, there must be specific regulations and standards on using foreign textbooks for Vietnam’s schools. A weaponry factory in northern Vietnam has built its own ‘spa’ where workers enjoy free herbal baths and massages to cleanse their body of harmful toxins from work. The Z131 factory, located in the northern province of Thai Nguyen, is a key weapon manufacturing plant of the defense ministry’s General Department of Defense Industry. It is responsible for producing weapons, ammunition and other equipment for the Vietnamese military. With its revenue topping VND1.4 trillion (US$59.75 million) in 2018, the factory has found ways to make sure its personnel receive the best possible rewards for their dedication.
