Vietnam arrests 3 Thai nationals in $2.2 million drug bust

Police in northern Vietnam arrested three men from Thailand on Tuesday for smuggling heroin worth around VND50 billion (nearly $2.2 million) into the country. The suspects were caught early on Tuesday morning in Dien Bien Province with sacks containing around 44 kilograms of heroin and 500,000 methamphetamine pills, police said. They had attempted to escape by car before they were stopped, said officers stationed across the Laos border, a major drug trafficking route in the region. The investigation is ongoing, but initial findings suggest the drugs were meant for a third country. Second national survey on violence against women and girls launched
The survey will be carried out by the General Statistics Office (GSO) of Vietnam from this March, under the theme of “Women's health and life experience,” with technical support from the United Nations Population Fund and the Australian Embassy in Vietnam. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) will act as the coordinating body for the survey activities and facilitate the inclusion of the survey data into the development of national policies and programmes on gender-based violence prevention. Data collected from the survey will be published in early 2019. The survey will be carried out across the nation from this march. The first survey, conducted in 2010, found that violence against women in Vietnam was an alarming issue, as 58% of women aged between18-60 years, who had ever been married, were found to have experienced violence at least once in their lives.
