Of the total, the number of international visitors to the country by air and road grew by 1.4% and 26.9%, respectively, while arrivals on cruise ships fell by 30.5%. This month saw a 9.3% rise in the number of international arrivals in the country against the figure seen in December last year. Vietnam sacks, demotes top cops for state secret law violations
Prime Minster Nguyen Xuan Phuc signed the decisions to punish the two officials on Wednesday, 11 days after the Communist Party dismissed them from their Party positions and recommended further disciplinary actions. Bui Van Thanh has accordingly been dismissed from his position as Deputy Minister of Public Security, while Tran Viet Tan has retroactively lost his title as Deputy Minister of Public Security for the term 2011-2016 for violations previously uncovered by the Party's inspectors. The prime minister has also submitted a report to the president asking that Thanh and Tan be demoted from lieutenant general to colonel and colonel general to lieutenant general, respectively. Thanh was member of the Executive Committee of Public Security Force's Party Unit for the term 2016-2021 and member of the Executive Committee of the Party unit of the ministry's General Department of Logistics-Engineering between 2010 and 2015. Viet Nam received 1.43 million foreign tourists in January. — VNA/VNS Photo Quoc Viet Viet Nam received 1.43 million foreign tourists in January, a year-on-year increase of 42 per cent and 12.1 per cent higher than that in December 2017, says the General Statistics Office. The number of visitors increased this month because of two main reasons ---overseas Vietnamese had come to Viet Nam for Tet (Lunar New Year), and for countries in Europe, the United States and Australia, January was winter holiday season, leading to a higher demand in travelling abroad. In January, visitors from Asia were estimated at more than one million, a year-on-year surge of 53.9 per cent. Visitors from most of the major markets for Viet Nam increased, including tourists from mainland China, up by 69 per cent, and South Korea, up by 84 per cent. Number of international tourists in Vietnam increases in early 2018
The number of foreign tourists visiting Vietnam in January 2018 has risen compared to last year’s periods, according to the General Statistics Office. The figures released reveal that Vietnam has received an estimated 1.43 million international visitors during January. This represents an increase of a massive 42 percent year on year and 12.1 percent compared to December. Numbering more than one million people, visitors from Asian markets accounted for the lion’s share. They generated a 53.9 percent surge compared to the same period in 2017. The figure for tourism from Europe also witnessed a 22.8 percent climb from the equivalent point in the beginning month of last year, chiefly because January is the time for long-term rest and holidays in the continent. GrabBike drivers attacked by ‘xe om’ in southern Vietnam
Two GrabBike drivers were assaulted by a group of xe om in the southern city of Bien Hoa on Tuesday, the latest in a series of physical confrontations between the app-based and conventional motorbike taxi drivers in Vietnam. A video of the scuffle, which shows the xe om chasing and aggressively beating two of their app-based competitors with sticks, made the rounds of social media on Tuesday. In the footage, believed to be filmed at the Amata Industrial Park in Bien Hoa, the capital of Dong Nai Province which borders Ho Chi Minh City, one GrabBike driver suffering from a bleeding head is seen being taken to the hospital by his coworker. The video sparked social media outrage, and is not the first time the rivalry between the app-based and conventional xe om drivers has turned violent.
