Hanoi to discourage taxi transport development
Experts have proposed that Hanoi should not encourage taxi development in the time to come but foster public transport instead. Taxi in a quality test Vice President of Hanoi People’s Committee, Nguyen Van Khoi, had a working session on the topic on April 18. An official from the Hanoi Department of Transportation said taxis in Hanoi could be considered as both public and private means of transport, and while taxis could not be as effective as buses or a metro, they were more useful than private cars and used more frequently. However, taxi services should not be encouraged to expand. Support for other forms of public transport including buses, trams and rail networks were more important in the long run. According to data released by the Department, there will be 21,000 taxis operating in the city with 10,000 alone in city centre in 2015; that number will increased to 26,000 with 12,500 taxis running in city centre by 2020. Minister of Transport Truong Quang Nghia said that Noi Bai International Airport would face overcrowding in several years to come if its expansion projects are not carried out soon.The Ministry of Transport on September 12 had a meeting with Hanoi authorities on the city’s transport network development and planning. Hanoi expects EIB’s further support for public transport
Vice Chairman of the Hanoi municipal People's Committee Nguyen The Hung made the remarks at the meeting with EIB Vice President for Asia Jonathan Taylor in Hanoi on January 10. Hung said that Hanoi is boosting the transport infrastructure development and environmental protection, adding that the city will build nine metro lines with a total length of 410km. He noted that Hanoi is constructing the metro lines 2A and 3 which use official development assistance (ODA) from many lenders, including the EIB. The EIB will provide Vietnam with over EUR140 million for the construction of metro line 3 and purchase of new rolling stock on the line which accounts for 15% of the total investment capital of the metro project. The restructuring process now put focus on the divestment process of Vietnam Railways (VNR). With regard to the equitization process of VNR, the government is expected to reduce its share at the company to 51% to invite investors, with an aim to implement restructuring plan and competing with other transportation models, said the Chairman of Board of VNR Vu Anh Minh. VNR has previously completed the first phase of restructuring plan in scaling down its business lines, which focuses on freight transportation and increased the chartered capital to VND 3,2 trillion (roughly US$ 141 million). Transgender Vietnamese drug trafficker caught transporting narcotics for money to undergo surgery
Police in northern Vietnam have arrested a man in possession of 23,686 synthetic narcotic pills weighing approximately eight kilograms. The drugs were on their way from Ho Chi Minh City to the northern province of Hai Phong when the trafficker was busted in Hai Duong Province. The number of pills is the largest-ever single seizure by Hai Duong police officers, according to Colonel Cu Ngoc Nam, chief of its criminal division. Le Vo Thuy Vy, 25, was captured at around 5:50 am on Monday in Hai Duong’s Tu Ky District while he was sitting in a taxi. The drugs were concealed inside a handbag in the vehicle’s trunk. At the police station, Vy initially provided investigators with the fake ID of a 19-year-old man named Nguyen Dang Phat, but later admitted to being transgender. Sea transport posts positive growth
At a recent conference about the maritime transport sector, Vinamarine said the shipping volume of Vietnamese vessels last year totalled 130.9 million tonnes of cargo, up 6 percent from 2016. Domestic ships are now undertaking nearly 100 percent of domestic sea shipping, except for shipping of LPG and bulk cement. Since 2014 to the end of 2017, river-sea compatible ships transported 36.2 million tonnes of cargo. Last year, they completed 22,000 shipments, an increase of 67 percent year-on-year. Shipping volume was 18.5 tonnes of cargo, up 56 percent from 2016.
