The Marcos family’s last gasp
Viet Nam News By John Nery* With President Rodrigo Duterte in power, the Marcos family is ascendant in Philippine national politics again. The remains of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos have been buried at the national heroes’ cemetery; his only son and namesake has a live election protest against the incumbent vice president; his eldest daughter Imee, the governor of his home province of Ilocos Norte, is polling well among likely candidates for the Senate; and his wife Imelda, at 89, is on her third term as representative of the Marcos’ old congressional bailiwick. But despite the obvious support of a still-popular president and a slick, long-running, well-funded social media operation promoting the Marcos worldview, the Duterte era may turn out to be the Marcos family’s last gasp. These years may be their last opportunity to win back the presidency and everything that goes with it. It will certainly not be for lack of trying, or the help of friends in high … [Read more...] about The Marcos family’s last gasp
Samsung to invest billions in new tech to drive fresh growth
It includes artificial intelligence, self-driving cars and biopharmaceuticals, as it searches for ways to drive future growth. The investment will be primarily led by Samsung Electronics, the world's biggest maker of memory chips, which has faced a string of setbacks in recent years, including a fall in smartphone sales and a corruption scandal that saw its vice-chairman Lee Jae-yong jailed last year. Although demand for its memory chips remains robust, the market for its smartphones appears to have hit a wall, prompting the company to search for fresh growth opportunities. "Samsung expects innovations powered by AI technology will drive the industry's transformation, while the next-generation 5G telecommunications technology will create new opportunities in autonomous driving, the Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics," the company said in a statement. The $22 billion is part of a total of 180 trillion won ($161 billion) that the group plans to invest over the next three years across … [Read more...] about Samsung to invest billions in new tech to drive fresh growth

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics’ ailing chairman, Lee Kun-hee, was named by South Korean police on Thursday as a suspect in an 8.2 billion won ($7.5 million) tax evasion case that involved the use of bank accounts held by employees. A series of scandals have dogged the family of Samsung, the country’s biggest business empire. The chairman’s son Jay Y. Lee, heir to the Samsung Group, was released from detention earlier this week after an appeals court halved his sentence for bribery and corruption to 2-1/2 years and suspended it for four years. Following a heart attack in 2014, the elder Lee, 76, has remained hospitalized in Seoul’s Samsung Medical Centre and is difficult to communicate with having shown little sign of recovery. Until his imprisonment Jay Y. Lee had been regarded as the de facto head of the group. Police said elder Lee could not be questioned due to his physical condition and Samsung declined comment. “Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee and a … [Read more...] about Samsung chairman named as suspect in $7.5 million tax evasion case
