Coast guard officials in southern Vietnam have seized more than 1.2 million liters of diesel oil that three foreign boats with Thais and Cambodians crews were smuggling into Vietnam, the coast guard force said. The boats carrying 18 Cambodians and eight Thai nationals were caught transferring the fuel to a Vietnamese fishing boat around 80 nautical miles southeast of Vietnam’s Ca Mau last Friday. They tried to flee after spotting the coast guards but were captured after several hours of chase. None of them could produce legal documents for the fuel. The crews are still under arrest and subject to cash fines. (Photo: The Straits Times) Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s economy posted the strongest growth in five years in 2017 and is expected to maintain the outlook this year, driven robust exports and tourism. Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew an inflation-adjusted 3.9 percent in 2017, up from 3.3 percent from the previous year, marking its fastest expansion since 2012, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB). The economy looks set to grow faster this year with GDP forecast to expand by 3.6-4.6 percent. A steady recovery in exports and large government infrastructure projects, including the expansions of ports and roads as part of a 45 billion project for a new special economic zone on the east coast of the country, are expected to support growth in 2018. Buddhist followers, visitors flock to Keo Pagoda festival
At the Keo pagoda festival (Source: baothaibinh.vn) Thai Binh (VNA) – Thousands of Buddhist monks, nuns and followers and visitors flocked to the Keo Pagoda festival that opened in Vu Thu district in the Red River Delta province of Thai Binh on February 19 – the fourth day of the lunar New Year. The nearly 400-year-old pagoda is dedicated to Zen Master Duong Khong Lo (1016-1094) – the founder of the Keo Pagoda. The festival features religious rituals and communal activities such as Buddhist offerings, palanquin parades, love duet singing on boats, and folk games. The Keo pagoda was founded in 1061. After it was swept away by a flood in 1611, the pagoda was rebuilt in 1632 and most of its architectural features, including 17 structures with 128 rooms, remain until today.
