France's team hold the Davis Cup after winning the 2017 edition. (AFP/Denis Charlet) The shake-up for the men's team tournament received 71.43 per cent support from about 120 delegates at the International Tennis Federation annual meeting in Orlando, well ahead of the two-thirds majority needed for approval. Kosmos, an investment group led by Pique with Japanese and Chinese support, will spend US$3 billion over 25 years on the new event, with a European host for 2019 expected to be announced later this month. "I think Davis Cup has untapped potential," Pique said. "We had to bring this competition again to the top of the tennis world. This is what we expect. "Now we have a lot of work to do, with the federations, with the players. We want to know what the players want and make the best world possible." The current Davis Cup format is a knockout event played February, July, September and November at home and away venues around the globe, best-of-five match ties following Grand Slam … [Read more...] about ITF delegates approve radical Davis Cup overhaul

British tennis chiefs to vote against Davis Cup reform

August 15, 2018 by vir Leave a Comment

British tennis chiefs said on Wednesday (Aug 15) they will vote against the controversial reforms planned for the Davis Cup, claiming the radical changes could see fewer players taking part and a waning of fan interest. Andy Murray holds up the Davis Cup trophy after Britain's 2015 triumph over Belgium. (AFP/JOHN THYS) The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) said that even though they remain fully supportive of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and its leadership, "regrettably, it is unable to support their proposed Davis Cup reforms at this time, and will oppose the resolution at the ITF AGM tomorrow". Around 120 delegates at the ITF's annual meeting in Orlando will decide Thursday whether proposals by federation chief David Haggerty are to be given the go-ahead. Haggerty's plan will see the Davis Cup's sprawling existing format, stretched across the calendar year and played in all corners of the globe, condensed into a season-ending 18-nation event played at a single, … [Read more...] about British tennis chiefs to vote against Davis Cup reform

(JOSE JORDAN/AFP) The world number one's 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win in Valencia drew the tie level at 2-2, before veteran David Ferrer battled to a marathon 7-6 (7/1), 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 7-5 victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber to finish the job. Two breaks in each set were enough for Nadal to seal an impressively comfortable victory over world number four Zverev in what was only the 31-year-old's second outing since returning from a hip injury. Nadal said after the match he is still regaining sharpness. "The first set was fantastic," Nadal said. "There were times when I lost a bit of control because the match was tough, I had not competed for a long time and to maintain the level of the first set was complicated for me. "But in general it was a very important match and I am very … [Read more...] about Nadal crushes Zverev as Spain reach Davis Cup semi finals
