Developing Phu Quoc into tourism centre
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged local authorities of southern Kien Giang province to accelerate a plan to turn Phu Quoc, the largest island of Vietnam, into a big tourism centre. At his working session with Kien Giang authorities on November 22, PM Dung said the master plan to develop the island by 2010 and towards 2020 is going at a slow pace after four years of implementation, and thus failing to tap its potential. He asked the Ministry of Construction to coordinate with Kien Giang province to hire foreign experts for the implementation of infrastructure plans. He urged relevant ministries to focus on constructing main roads, completing Phu Quoc International Airport and An Thoi seaport on schedule and opening more international air routes to the island. The San Diu ethnic minority people, believed to have migrated from Guangdong, China in 1600, are now living in villages in Vietnam’s northern midlands and mountainous areas. The San Diu are also known as San Deo, Trai, Trai Dat and Man Quan Coc. San Diu women in their traditional clothes.
