Moscow blames UK as EU nations mull expelling Russian diplomats
Investigations are continuing in Britain over the poisoning of a former Russian double agent. (Photo: AFP/Geoff Caddick) Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov hit out at Britain for garnering EU support over the poisoning of a former double agent, suggesting that London's focus was now on making "the crisis with Russia as deep as possible". Diplomatic pressure is growing on Moscow over its role in the nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the English city of Salisbury in early March. The European Union is recalling its ambassador to Moscow for consultations and a number of member states are considering whether to follow Britain's lead and expel Russian intelligence agents posing as diplomats. "As for the decision taken, we regret in this context that again such decisions are taken using the wording 'highly likely'," President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Australia says open to UK joining Pacific trade group after Brexit
LONDON -- Australia said on Monday it would be open to the idea of Britain joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership regional trade group after it leaves the European Union. But Julie Bishop, visiting Britain as Prime Minister Theresa May tries to unite her cabinet on what they want from Brexit, also said Australia would only be able to strike a bilateral trade deal with Britain if London sticks to its plan to leave the EU’s customs union. “We would of course welcome interest from an economy the size of Britain‘s,” she said in response to a question about Britain joining the TPP after delivering a speech at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in London’s financial center. British trade minister Liam Fox said earlier this year that joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership was an option for the country after Brexit. The 11 TPP countries - which include Japan, Canada and Mexico as well as Australia - are due to sign their agreement in March. U.S. President Donald … [Read more...] about Australia says open to UK joining Pacific trade group after Brexit
Chinese paper says UK trying to grab attention with mission in disputed waters
Britain's Defence Ministry is trying to justify its existence and grab attention with a planned mission by a British warship to the disputed South China Sea next month, a Chinese newspaper said on Wednesday. A British warship will sail through the South China Sea, which Vietnam calls the East Sea, to assert freedom-of-navigation rights, British Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said in remarks published on Tuesday during a visit to Australia. British officials first flagged the voyage six months ago and the journey is likely to stoke tensions with China, who claim control of most of the area and have built military facilities on land features in the sea. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims to the energy-rich sea through which billions of dollars in trade pass each year. The widely read state-run tabloid the Global Times said Williamson needed to state clearly the purpose of the mission. "If not provocation, the Royal Navy should behave modestly … [Read more...] about Chinese paper says UK trying to grab attention with mission in disputed waters
