Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry has issued a diplomatic letter demanding the investigation of a Thai Navy boat opening fire at three Vietnamese fishing ships last Friday, leaving one fisherman missing and two others injured. The clash broke out at 2 pm on July 8, when three Vietnamese fishing boats operating in Thai waters were chased by a Thai Navy boat, the Vietnam News Agency reported on Sunday, citing the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand. The incident occurred at the approximate coordinates of 8oN 102oE in the Gulf of Thailand. The Vietnamese boats had sailed from Ben Tre Province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, carrying 18 seamen, according to the same source. Lighter sentence recommended for main accused in $6 mln bribery case

Police with the Ministry of Public Security said while Vu bribed officials to take favorable decisions in the acquisition by state-owned telecom giant MobiFone, he has proactively cooperated with authorities, done a lot of charitable work, and returned the money involved, minimizing losses to the state. Vu gave bribes of $3 million to the former Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Bac Son; $2.5 million to MobiFone's former chairman Le Nam Tra; $500,000 to the telecom giant's former CEO Cao Duy Hai and $200,000 to another former information minister, Truong Minh Tuan, then serving as Son's deputy. Former deputy transport minister dismissed with retrospective effect for wrongdoing
Nguyen Ngoc Dong and Nguyen Nhat received reprimands from Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Wednesday while Nguyen Van Cong got an official warning. Nguyen Hong Truong has been retrospectively stripped of his position as Deputy Minister of Transport for the 2011-15 and 2016-17 terms. The Communist Party had meted out similar punishments to them in July. According to the Communist Party's secretariat, Truong was responsible for violations committed by the ministry's Party Affairs Committee during his time as a member of the committee, deputy minister and head of the ministry's Steering Committee for Enterprise Innovation and Development. He was also found to be personally responsible for approving enterprise values and equitization plans for many companies and units under the transport ministry and seeking the government's approval for equitization plans, none of which was within his powers and were also in contravention of the law. Former Hanoi investment official arrested in money laundering case
Nguyen Tien Hoc was arrested as part of an investigation into agencies involved in bidding violations that had serious consequences, To An Xo, chief of staff of the Ministry of Public Security, said Thursday. Pham Thi Kim Tuyen, head of the department’s business registration division, is also being investigated for the same violations. The actions are being taken under an investigation of Nhat Cuong Mobile, a major tech firm in the capital city, for smuggling, accounting violations and money laundering, Xo said. Bui Quang Huy, 45, general director of Nhat Cuong Technical Services Trading Co. Ltd., is wanted by the police for alleged smuggling, money laundering and violations of the accounting law causing serious consequences. Police say Huy was the leader of an organized crime group responsible for cross border smuggling and maintaining two sets of accounting books to conceal revenues running into trillions of dong (VND1 trillion = $43 million).
