Illustrative photo (Source: VOV) Pham Quynh Mai, deputy head of the Multilateral Trade Policy Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, said that Vietnam has pledged to offer common tariff lines on goods imported from member countries of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans - Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The country has committed to eliminating 66 per cent of import tariffs right after the new - generation trade pact took effect on January 14, 2019. This ratio is set to increase to 86.5 per cent three years after the implementation of CPTPP. A five-to-10-year road map on tariff cuts will be planned for the remaining categories, Mai added. She recommended that local firms should make sense of CPTPP requirements as well as binding commitments by Vietnam and other member states. The economist said that, without the US, the new version of the TPP is still very important to the 11 remaining nations as it will span a market of nearly 500 million people and the member states together amount to more than 13% of global GDP and 15% of global trade. Among five Asian members of the CPTPP, which are Brunei, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, some have greatly benefited from surges in foreign direct investment (FDI), he noted, citing Vietnam having received large FDI inflows into the garment and textile industry and other manufacturing sectors since many investors want to get access to the CPTPP market.
