At the launching ceremony on February 18, the association’s chairman Nguyen Sy Truong cited the Ministry of Health’s information that since the first organ transplant in Vietnam in 1992, the number of such cases has remained low. Meanwhile, the number of patients waiting for donated tissues and organs is growing fast, he said, adding that only a few of them have had the opportunity to receive organ transplants due to the scarcity of donors in the country. Red Cross Society launches anti-drowning project
The project will be carried out in three communes Binh Hoa, Binh Chuong and Binh My in Binh Son district. It is planned to build three swimming pools and provide training courses to teachers who will teach swimming for 1,200 kids in the communes. The project will raise inhabitants’ awareness of drowning accidents through the media. Speaking at the seminar, head of Quang Ngai Red Cross Society Nguyen Hoang Hiep said that statistically, drowning accidents killed 31 kids and 30 kids in 2017 and 2018. Worse, the rate of children having little to no swimming ability is high; accordingly, the project is a good one which should be expanded. It is expected that the project will benefit 3,000 kids directly and 6,000 kids indirectly by October, 2019. A charity project named Foodbank Vietnam has been launched, aiming to reduce food waste and help the poor. HCM CITY — A charity organisation called Foodbank Việt Nam was launched on Saturday to distribute food to deprived people and reduce food wastage. Foodbank is a programme by the Việt Nam Council of the Red Cross in collaboration with the Youth Social Welfare Centre, C.P. Việt Nam Livestock Corporation, and DSF Việt Nam Co.Ltd. It operates along the lines of food banks around the world, soliciting donation of food from companies and organisations and handing over whatever it gets to needy people. To start with, Foodbank Việt Nam is providing free food to 10 social welfare centres and shelters in HCM City. It will soon expand throughout the country.
