(Source: AFP) Hanoi (VNA) – A court in Indonesia sentenced a person who supports the so-called Islamic State (IS) organisation eight years in jail for playing a role in a suicide bomb attack in Jakarta earlier this year. Ali Makhmudin, 41, was the latest extremist sentenced for his involvement in the attack. He was accused of violating Indonesia’s anti-terror law. Ali Makhmudin, who once pledged his allegiance to the IS in 2014, prepared bombs used in the Jakarta attack in January, which killed eight people. is also the first big one in Indonesia in the past seven years. Indonesian Military Commander Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto said on December 13 that a total of 117,000 personnel, including over 17,000 from the military, would be dispatched to religious buildings, shopping centers and tourism destinations where people would gather to ensure a safe holiday season. (Source: asia-first.com) Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia's economy is forecast to grow at a slower rate in the first quarter of this year despite the government's efforts to boost buying power and exports. Indonesian Chief Economic Minister Darmin Nasution said on March 19 that he estimated the country's gross domestic product (GDP) in the first three months will grow lower than 5.01 percent, the pace recorded in the same period last year. Nasution explained that the country's harvest season of rice will take place in April, instead of March, reducing contributions of the farming sector to the national economy. Kiki Muhamad Iqbal was convicted of organising the twin bombings, and mobilising others to participate in the bombings that killed three police officers and injured 12 at Kampung Melayu bus station, according to the North Jakarta court. This was the second attack linked to the Islamic State (IS) in Indonesia over the past two years. In January 2016, four IS-linked militants mounted a gun-and-bomb attack at a busy intersection outside a Starbucks cafe in central Jakarta, killing themselves and four others. Indonesia strengthens security after a series of bombings (Source: VNA) Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s police on May 15 shot dead a militant and arrested 13 others suspected of links to suicide bombings in Surabaya city on on May 13 and 14, which left at least 20 dead and many others injured. Surabaya police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera said the militant died in a shootout in the city with counter-terrorism police. Meanwhile, 13 suspects were arrested during raids in Surabaya and its neighbouring cities of Malang and Pasuruan. On May 13, three Christian churches in Surabaya were hit by bombings, with the perpetrators identified to be members of a family, including four children aged nine to 18. The bombings were followed by a bomb explosion in an apartment building in East Java’s Sidoarjo town in the evening, which killed a mother and her 17-year-old son.
