Made-in-Vietnam’ lean management model for sustainability
As the head of the research team developing this model, where did you take inspiration from?In 1998, after graduating from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, I studied and worked in Japan for 14 years. At the time, I had the opportunity to work for Toyota, which is considered having the most advanced lean management system in Japan. There I understood the model of the Toyota Production System (TPS) which is the archetype and a shining example of lean manufacturing, and started to study this model to apply it in Vietnam.Since 1995, Japan has been supporting Vietnam’s research on industrial policies, methodologies, and soft components in various ways, but with limited results despite the fact that Vietnamese people are smart and sensitive towards transferred technology. Thus, I found that we cannot apply business management models mechanically. Each nation or each enterprises has a set of different circumstances and must find management approaches suitable for them. Vietnam looks to one million member business community
In 2013, the number of newly-registered enterprises was 76,955, a year-on-year increase of 10.1%, while the number of dissolved and suspended firms was 60,737, an increase of 11.9% compared to 2012. In 2013, the business community nationwide had only 16,218 new members, equivalent to 65% of the new-registered enterprises of Hanoi in 2017 (25,160 firms). It is clear that in spite of the continuously narrowed gap between the number of newly-registered enterprises and the number of dissolved and suspended enterprises, the increase of the number of enterprises each year is quite slow and has never reached the number of 100,000. In other words, there should be new breakthroughs with more diversified sources and new channels so that the business community nationwide (around 600,000 active members in 2017) strives to have at least one million members by 2020, over 1.5 million by 2025, and at least two million by 2030 as targeted by Resolution No.10/NQ-TW dated June 3, 2017 at the fifth … [Read more...] about Vietnam looks to one million member business community

HCMC to allow businesses to use sidewalks if they manage them in return: official
After a year that witnessed a radical sidewalk cleanup campaign in Ho Chi Minh City, authorities have decided to soften their stance on the issue of people and businesses that encroach on the pavements, but with certain conditions, a city leader said on Wednesday. Deputy Chairman of HCMC Tran Vinh Tuyen said at a meeting that the sidewalks are a very complicated matter. “Sidewalks are like golden land,” he said. “Everyone is eyeing them, and if we loosen control just a bit they will be snapped up by one person or another.” However, although the city believes that sidewalks should be for pedestrians, it will temporarily allow people to use the space for other purposes, he said. Those given the right to use the sidewalks for purposes such as parking lots will have to take responsibility for maintaining traffic safety, among other things.
