Canon controversy: Photo alteration a ‘no no’
More than 3,000 people responded to a fast photography challenge in Hanoi last week. The sole grand prize for the challenge, Canon Photomarathon Vietnam, was won by a photo taken by amateur Tran Huu Long, which was submitted under the “Hard Working” category. On October 28, the awards ceremony showed Long’s winning picture, which had a dog meat sign (THIT CHO) in the background. However, when this image was released and circulated in the media by Canon Vietnam, the word "cho" (dog) at the top-right corner of the photo was replaced with "ga" (chicken). The change triggered a debate over the ethics of “photoshopping” contest entries and plunged the competition into its worst controversy in the 13 years it has been held in the country. Reporter: Do you think that the photo “Napalm girl” and other photos you took depicting children hit by napalm bombs in Trang Bang changed your life forever?” Journalist-photographer Nick Ut Journalist-photographer Nick Ut: I took the “Napalm girl” photo when Phan Thi Kim Phuc (the girl in the photo) was just nine years old. After taking that photo, I brought Kim Phuc to the hospital and she was saved. It could be said that that historic photo changed my life and my career. The photo left deep impressions on the public in various countries. It helped boost the anti-war movement and encouraged people around the world to voice their aspirations for peace. The photo was posted on the front pages of a good number of known papers in the world and it won me the reputable US Pulitzer award in 1973. For years, Kim Phuc and I have kept in touch. World Press Photo Exhibition 2018 opens in Hanoi
The World Press Photo Exhibition mark its first arrival back in Hanoi after 15 years when it opened on June 16 evening, showcasing 130 most memorable press photographs from around the globe. Chairman of the Hanoi municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung (C), Dutch Ambassador to Vietnam Nienke Trooste (L), and delegates at the exhibition. Taking place over three weeks, at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, No. 42 Yet Kieu Street, Hanoi, the event is organised by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Vietnam, in collaboration with the Vietnam Journalists’ Association (VJA), aiming to honour the winners from 125 countries who sent over 73,000 photos to the 61st World Press Photo Contest last April. World Press Photo Exhibition in Hanoi
The winning photo at the 2018 World Press Photo Contest (Photo by Ronaldo Schemidt/ AFP)The event will be held by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Vietnam, in coordination with Vietnam Journalists Association, as part of activities to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Netherlands-Vietnam diplomatic ties. It features 130 photographs of famous stories, selected from the 61st World Press Photo Contest. The winning photos were selected from over 73,000 photos taken by 4,548 photographers from 125 countries. The exhibition was displayed in 90 major cities around the world and attracted over four million visitors. The event in Vietnam is part of its around-the-world itinerary in 2018. Pulitzer winning photographer donates photos to Vietnam’s museum
Former Associated Press war photographer Nick Ut (Left) hands over his camera to the Vietnam Press Museum. (Photo: hanoimoi.com.vn) Hanoi (VNA) - Former Associated Press war photographer Nick Ut (real name Huynh Cong Ut) handed over his two cameras and 52 photos to the Vietnam Press Museum at a ceremony on June 1. Some of the photos were taken during the war in Vietnam and others after 1975. Many have never been published before. Nick Ut, who was born in 1951 in the southern province of Long An, now resides in Los Angeles. He began taking photographs for AP when he was 16. He had also covered battles in Laos and Cambodia. After the war in Vietnam ended, he was sent to Japan to work. In 1977, he moved to Los Angeles, where he continued working for AP capturing news events and the lives of Hollywood stars. Since his retirement in 2007, Nick Ut has returned to Vietnam more often to take pictures of people and landscapes. The Netherlands will turn orange for King’s Day
Viet Nam News On April 27, the Dutch celebrate the birthday of their head of state, King Willem Alexander; the national holiday is known as King’s Day. Ambassador Nienke Trooster sends Việt Nam News readers a message on the occasion. Trade and innovation are a big part of the Dutch culture and mind-set, which is visible in the many ‘free markets’ (flea markets) throughout the country on King’s Day. One in five Dutch citizens will participate by selling their second-hand goods for a bargain price, or try to earn some money with the most innovative ideas and games. Besides the markets, many concerts and special events are organised in public places. A free outdoor concert with world famous Dutch bands and DJs is held on Amsterdam’s Museumplein, where as many as 800,000 people gather.
