Former tourism chief blames visa rule for Vietnam’s falling tourist arrivals

Editor’s note: Luong Hoai Nam, former deputy head of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, says the current visa policy is discouraging international tourists from visiting the country in his op-ed exclusively written for Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper. Nam’s piece of writing is particularly worth noticing at a time when Vietnam reported its tenth straight drop in tourism arrival number in March, according to the VNAT statistics. The Vietnamese tourism visa policy, especially the complicated procedures to get a visa, is one of the import reasons why the number of international tourists visiting Vietnam did not increase but continuously shrank over the past time. Local tourism authorities attributed the falling number arrivals in ten months in a row to the plunges of the Russian and Chinese markets, while the growths of other markets could not offset for such losses. Such explanation, to me, is only partially correct. Reality is that the tourism visa policy is a … [Read more...] about Former tourism chief blames visa rule for Vietnam’s falling tourist arrivals

RCEP offers greater flexibility for Vietnam in exercising rules of origin

The Hanoitimes - Vietnamese exporters might find it easy to meet the required rules of origin for their products as a significant portion of its production input is sourced from China and South Korea. One of the most important benefits from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) for Vietnam over existing free trade agreements (FTAs) is that the former offers greater flexibility on the use of raw materials sourced from member countries, according to Viet Dragon Securities Company (VDSC). US, Vietnam share deep commitment to rules-based principles: O’Brien

The Hanoitimes - Together, the two countries have crafted a shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. US Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (APNSA) Robert C. O’Brien has ended his two-day Vietnam visit with a speech highlighting the rules-based principles in the Indo-Pacific. US National Security Advisor Robert C. O’Brien. As such, America has taken a firm stance against China’s coercion in the South China Sea and the growing security threats in the Mekong region, he added. Talking about the visit, he said it reaffirms … [Read more...] about US, Vietnam share deep commitment to rules-based principles: O’Brien

Chinese court orders man to pay ex-wife for housework in landmark ruling

A Chinese man has been ordered to pay his ex-wife almost $8,000 for years of unpaid housework, in a landmark divorce case that has sparked furious debate in China. Under China's new civil code divorcing spouses have the right for the first time to request compensation if they bore more responsibilities at home. (Photo: AFP/Nicolas Asfouri) Under the country's new civil code, which came into effect this year, divorcing spouses have the right for the first time to request compensation if they bore more responsibilities at home. Ex-wife Wang told the Beijing court that during five years of marriage she "looked after the child and managed household chores, while (her husband) Chen did not care about or participate in any other household affairs besides going to work". She filed a claim for extra compensation for housework and childcare duties, according to a February 4 court statement. The court ruled that Wang had indeed taken on more household … [Read more...] about Chinese court orders man to pay ex-wife for housework in landmark ruling

India warns states of worsening COVID-19 situation if rules ignored

India warned on Wednesday that a breach of guidelines on testing and other measures to contain the coronavirus could worsen a recent spurt in infections in many states, particularly after it detected several variants. Nearly a month after the health minister declared that COVID-19 had been contained, states such as Maharashtra in the west and Kerala in the south have reported a surge in cases, as reluctance grows over mask-wearing and social distancing norms. India’s tally of infections stands at 11.03 million, swelled in the past 24 hours by 13,742, health ministry data shows, while deaths rose by a two-week high of 104 to 156,567. “Any laxity in implementing stringent measures to curb the spread, especially in view of new strain of virus...could compound the situation,” the health ministry said in a statement that singled out nine states and a federal territory. India has confirmed the long-time presence of two mutant variants - N440K and E484Q - in addition to those first … [Read more...] about India warns states of worsening COVID-19 situation if rules ignored
