Deceased Japanese expert infected with new virus variant: Health Minister A Japanese expert who died in Hanoi on February 13 has been infected with a new variant strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, said Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long. Long announced the results of the expert’s genome sequencing at a meeting of permanent Cabinet members in Hanoi on February 24. He did not reveal specifically but said this was the first time the new strain has been detected in Vietnam. The strain, he said, has circulated mainly in the Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan (China), and India. According to the minister, Japan, the deceased expert’s home country, has yet to record this strain. To scientists, the strain it not highly transmissible, but the extent of its aggravation is not clear, said Long. Epidemiologists stated that the new strain is not linked to the fresh coronavirus hotspot in Hai Duong province where a variant strain originating from the United States was recorded. Export value skyrockets over Lunar New Year Vietnam's export turnover during this Lunar New Year saw breakthrough growth, occupying nearly half of the total export-import turnover. The latest data published by the General Department of Vietnam Customs showed that export volume over the seven days (February 10-16) of the Lunar New Year holiday reached $730 million, rising 79 per cent on-year and accounting for about 44 per cent of the $1.67 billion export-import turnover. The main export articles include mobile devices and components valued at $332 million; computer and electronic products worth $251 million. The two categories accounted for 80 per cent of the total export value. This Lunar New Year saw exports going to 80 markets, seven more than last year. August 10-16: National mourning held for former Party leader Le Kha Phieu
National mourning held for former Party leader Le Kha Phieu Vietnam observed two national days of mourning for former General Secretary of the Party Central Committee Le Kha Phieu from August 14-15 at the National Funeral Hall in Hanoi, Thong Nhat Hall in Ho Chi Minh City and 25B Hall in the late leader’s hometown of Thanh Hoa. The Vietnamese Embassies abroad also held respect-paying services and opened books of condolences in commemoration of the former Party chief. Leaders of countries and political parties offered their condolences to leaders of the Vietnamese Party and State, people and the family of the Vietnamese former Party leader over his passing away.
