Viet Nam News by Mary Pecaut I first set foot in Việt Nam in 2014. As a US citizen embarrassed by my country’s policies during and following the American-Việt Nam War, I was uncertain about the welcome that awaited me. Because I spoke French and had family members living in Toronto, I prepared to answer that certain-to-be-asked question: Where are you from? By replying, Canada. In the early years I went to the fireworks and partied with friends in the expat bars around Hoi An. Often I would meet people I hadn’t seen for months as I tend to live quietly but was also busy with teaching. In the more recent years as I had some dogs as pets, I tended to stay at home or take the dogs for walks during the holiday evenings because it’s so calm, peaceful and lovely to see how people have decorated their houses. I like the idea of “starting afresh’ – throwing out old things, cleaning up and yet, remembering their ancestors. I’ve lost both my parents in the last two years so this has been on my mind. I admire the devotion to the family, helping out with the Tet chores and working for the parents while they do stuff for Tet. I like the … [Read more...] about Tet is the time for family, friends in Vietnam

Sharing an interest in social work, the five girls started a non-profit project called “Every family is great” last October. The project aims to provide children with perspectives on differences and variety of families. Huong Linh, one of the founders, said the topic of family was inspired by her own childhood. “My parents separated when I was in grade 4, but neither of them gave me any explanation of the situation,” Linh said, “I felt hurt for a very long time until I grew up and figured it out by myself.
