What a dollar buys in Vietnam

Recently, one of the global expat living publications released a whizz bang study on the cost of living in various countries around the world for expatriates, and Vietnam came out on top of the pile as the absolute cheapest. Exactly how affordable is Vietnam? A while back I went through a line-by-line exercise detailing typical expat living expenses , but now let’s take a different tack, looking at what can be bought for one little ole U.S. dollar in Vietnam. In Vietnamese dong terms, that U.S. dollar buys about VND23,000. The Australian and Canadian dollars weigh in at about VND18,000, whereas the euro pegs at VND27,000. The UK’s pound sterling converts to just short of VND32,000. Confused yet? Me too, so screw it, we’ll just stick with the U.S. dollar and use VND20,000 as the local currency equivalent, a nice, easy round number. I include the VND amounts below to facilitate easy conversion to other currencies. Actually, using a lower value than the prevailing … [Read more...] about What a dollar buys in Vietnam

Vietnamese man buys, reviews interesting items for fans online

A Vietnamese man has become well known among social media users in the country for his videos, in which he reviews trending items that he used his own money to purchase online and tests if they are really as helpful as advertised. That man is 30-year-old Le Thanh Kien, who runs the one-man TikTok account named Kien Review with the slogan “Expose truths behind advertisements.” Since its first video released in August 2020, Kien Review has attracted 6.1 million followers, who want to know the utility of online products without having to pay for them. A self-proclaimed quiet and unobtrusive person, Kien told Tuoi Tre Cuoi Tuan (Tuoi Tre Weekly) magazine that he started creating TikTok videos as the coronavirus pandemic had affected his job as a mechanic at local factories and made him spend more time growing ornamental plants at home. “That time, my house had leaking walls, so I searched on Facebook for a solution,” Kien recalled the occasion when he had reviewed a spray … [Read more...] about Vietnamese man buys, reviews interesting items for fans online

Men who used monkeys to steal cash arrested in India

Two men who roamed the Indian capital using monkeys to rob unsuspecting victims have been arrested, New Delhi police said Saturday. The pair were apprehended after one victim complained to officers that three men carrying monkeys had surrounded and robbed him of 6,000 rupees ($80), a local police official told AFP. Authorities across India have been grappling with the menace posed by monkeys in Delhi and other populated cities, where they often enter homes in search of food. But it is illegal for Indians to capture them under a 1972 law. "When the victim was sitting in an autorickshaw, the men also entered (the vehicle) and asked one monkey to sit on the front seat and another at the back," the official said. "They took the money the lawyer had in his wallet and fled with the monkeys." Police suspected the gang were behind other similar thefts and officers set up a dedicated team to track down the culprits, who were arrested Thursday at a bus stop along with their animal … [Read more...] about Men who used monkeys to steal cash arrested in India

Government mulls allowing companies to buy renewable power directly from producers

The Direct Power Purchase Agreements (DPPA) policy will allow manufacturing companies with minimum 22-kilovolts power lines to negotiate and buy from solar and wind power plants. In the first three years, when the policy will be trialed, the customer needs to buy at least 80 percent of the agreed power. Solar and wind farms with a capacity of 30 megawatts or more can sign these agreements, and need to begin commercial operation within nine months of joining the pilot program. The program, likely to start soon, will run until 2023 with a total capacity of around 1,000 megawatts. At the end of the trial period the ministry will review it, and, if happy with the outcome, will seek to make the program permanent. … [Read more...] about Government mulls allowing companies to buy renewable power directly from producers

Danang seeking ways to rescue injured monkey

Forest rangers in the central city of Danang’s Son Tra District are seeking ways to rescue a monkey that has been seriously injured by a trap. Tourists have taken photos of the injured monkey Tran Thang, head of the district’s Forest Protect, said the trap, which was still attached to the animal's leg, had damaged the red-faced spider monkey’s right foot, resulting in bleeding. “Over the past few days, despite great efforts, we have failed to catch the animal which has been going around the Linh Ung Pagoda area. However, when people approach it, it often seems to be highly alert and tries to keep away from them. We do not have enough specialist equipment such as tranquiliser guns to catch the monkey. We’ll co-operate with experts from Ho Chi Minh City to rescue it,” Thang added. Earlier, a group of tourists saw the monkey with the trapped foot. The animal tried to remove the trap but failed. As a result, the monkey’s injured foot … [Read more...] about Danang seeking ways to rescue injured monkey
