The investor, HCMC Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR), made the decision after failing to figure out why one of the Elastomeric Laminated Bearings pads had fallen out from its position between two beams on the line’s elevated section last October. These pads are made from high purity elastomers that encapsulate layered internal steel reinforcing plates and are designed for use in bridge and building constructions for beam support. The faulty pad was on the elevated section of the line, which runs 19.7 km (12.24 miles) from Ben Thanh Market in District 1 to Suoi Tien theme park in District 9. The incident, which happened in October, was detected after cracks were seen on a section in Thu Duc District, now part of the newly established Thu Duc City. Soon after, the contractor, a consortium comprising Vietnam’s Civil Engineering Construction Corporation No. 6 (Cienco 6) and Japan's Sumitomo Corporation, said they had fixed the issue, yet made no mention of how the pad … [Read more...] about Independent consultant to investigate beam fault on HCMC metro route

Small investors oppose expanding trading lot Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HOSE)’s proposal to raise the minimum trading lot to 1,000 shares is receiving mixed opinions from market experts and investors. The proposal was initiated by newly-appointed General Director of HOSE Le Hai Tra as a solution to reduce system overloads which have troubled traders recently. A 1,000 minimum trading lot will limit the participation of small investors, while the stock market is moving towards fairness and equality, said a budding investor. “My friends and I, when joining the stock market, only have a few tens to several hundreds of millions of dong, raising the minimum trading lot to 1,000 shares will directly affect our investment capacity,” said individual investor Diep. “With expensive stocks, we may have to spend hundreds of millions of dong to buy the minimum 1,000 shares,” she said. House of exiles draws history buffs to Buon Ma Thuot
The complex in the Central Highlands province of Da Lak was built by French colonialists in the period 1930-1931 to exile and detain convicted central Vietnam partisans. Among them were pioneers in the Soviet Nghe Tinh movement. There are six main prison houses. All are lined up with high iron bar windows, solid walls, tiled roofs and meshes of barbed wire above the ceiling to prevent prison break. Being shackled depended on a prisoner's sentence and "level of danger". All inmates, especially political prisoners, survived under extreme conditions and were often brutally tortured. Prisoners were employed on construction sites, plantations or in factories under the close supervision of guards. Prison guards tortured new inmates prior to interrogation. Beside six collective prison houses, dark and damp, two-square-meter solitary confinement areas were reserved for loyal soldiers who had led the resistance, protests … [Read more...] about House of exiles draws history buffs to Buon Ma Thuot
