Why has Vietnam decided to seek a UNSC seat now? Tran Viet Thai Under the UNSC’s mechanism, there are five permanent member states and 10 non-permanent member states. The non-permanent member states are divided into groups based on their geographical regions. Vietnam is situated in the 54-member Asia-Pacific region, which is one of the five regional groups at the UN. Vietnam was selected as the only candidate in the Asia-Pacific region for a non-permanent seat at the UNSC for the 2020-2021 tenure at a monthly meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group at the UN on May 25, 2018. Israel pulls out of race for UN Security Council seat
Israel on Friday (May 4) dropped out of a race for a Security Council seat in 2019 and 2020 following a campaign by Arab states at the United Nations to block the bid. The Security Council is made up of five permanent members - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - while the ten other seats are filled by elected members that serve two-year stints. Mansour al-Otaibi told reporters after a UN delegation ended a tour of Bangladesh's refugee camps on April 30 that this is a humanitarian crisis and a human rights issue, and the situation cannot remain without a solution. The diplomat said all parties should show commitment to solve it as soon as possible. The secretary-general once again condemns in the strongest possible terms any use of such weapons for which there can be no justification," Guterres' deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters. The presidency of the Council is held by each of the 15 members in turn for one month, following the English alphabetical order of the Member States names. It is the second time that Kuwait holds the Council Presidency, with the first being in February 1979. Kuwait first joined the United Nations in 1963 and was granted membership at the Security Council in 1978 and 1979.
