Farmers harvest the winter-spring rice in Tiền Giang Province’s Gò Công Tây District. — VNA/VNS Photo Minh Trí HCM CITY — Farmers in the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta, the country’s rice granary, are having a bumper winter-spring harvest and getting high prices for their grain. In Tiền Giang, farmers in the Gò Công freshwater zone have harvested around 4,000ha and got an average yield of 6.5 tonnes per hectare, 1.2 tonnes more than last year, according to the province Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The zone, which comprises Gò Công Đông, Gò Công Tây and Chợ Gạo districts and Gò Công Town, is well known for growing fragrant and high-quality rice varieties for export. Nguyễn Văn Mẫn, the department director, said farmers there sowed more than 21,800ha of rice, or 96 per cent of the target, almost all of it with fragrant and high-quality varieties. For over four decades, Nguyen Van Cong has been transforming ordinary garden shrubs into beautiful works of art. Cong, better known as Nam Cong, works out of his garden in Ben Tre Province’s Cho Lach District, where lately he’s been busy trimming weeping fig plants to resemble buffalo in honor this year’s zodiac animal. Hanoi reports case of COVID-19 relapse A patient has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 again after being given the all-clear, the Hanoi Centre of Disease Control (CDC Hanoi) said on February 25. The 48-year-old patient, who resides in Dich Vong ward in Cau Giay district, has been taken to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases for further quarantine and treatment. The case does not pose any risk of community transmission, Deputy Director of CDC Hanoi Khong Minh Tuan said. Hanoi had reported 36 COVID-19 cases between January 27 and 12pm on February 25, according to the municipal Department of Health. Vietnam’s southern region gets hotter this weekend
People in localities across the southern region of Vietnam are likely to experience a hot weekend on Saturday and Sunday, according to the Southern Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. The cities of Bien Hoa and Long Khanh in Dong Nai Province, and Dong Xoai in Binh Phuoc Province will have the temperature of approximately 35 degrees Celsius on Saturday. But the real feel can approach 38 degrees Celsius. In the Mekong Delta region, the temperature in Vi Thanh City in Hau Giang Province, Can Tho City, and Vinh Long Province will be over 34 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, in other places, the temperature fluctuates from 31 to 34 degrees Celsius.
