Several of the surviving victims of the attack at the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) School in Highlands Ranch, a Denver suburb, were initially listed in critical condition at local hospitals and in surgery, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said at a briefing. An 18-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene, Spurlock said a short time later. "Two individuals walked into the STEM school, got deep inside the school, and engaged students in two separate locations," Spurlock said. He told Reuters in a brief interview that the suspects, each armed with a handgun, opened fire in two separate classrooms. HCM City to pilot ’smart schools’

(Source: VNA) HCM City (VNA) - The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has sought approval from the People’s Committee for piloting a “smart schools” programme based extensively on IT use in management and communication between schools and students’ families. Nguyen Van Hieu, the department’s deputy director, told the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the programme is one of the steps in preparing for a smart city by 2020. Districts 1, 2 and 12 have been chosen for the trialling, he said. The smart schools would have teachers trained to fluently use touch-screen boards and design e-learning lessons, and they would use and contribute to creating open databases for teaching, he said. Event raises VND1.5 billion for children with cancer

(Photo: voh) The Sunflower Festival, the 12th of its kind, is among activities to mark the 12th year of the “Thuy’s Dream” programme held by the Vietnam Youth Union in coordination with the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper. The Thuy’s Dream programme for children with cancer is named after Le Thanh Thuy – a high school girl known and admired for her long fight against bone cancer prior to her death on November 2, 2007. This year’s festival at the Ho Chi Minh City Student Cultural House in the Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City’s premises in Thu Duc District is one of activities to mark the 12th anniversary of “Uoc mo cua Thuy” program in commemoration of the death of Le Thanh Thuy, a high school girl famous for her long fight against bone cancer. With the theme ‘For the Sunflower Warrior,’ the fundraising event comprised of theater named Sunflower, “ Sunflower bus” to encourage people to use public transportation, gifting 1,000 children patients and giving scholarships “ Thuy’s dream” to kids with cancer. Service package launched to prevent child labor, abuse
The package will provide children at Thien An school for disadvantaged children with daily lunch, health insurance, a library with 500 book copies and extracurricular activities. Besides, the children’s parents will be given vocational training to improve their families’ livelihoods.
