French group assists Hanoi in building int’l agricultural wholesale market

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed in Hanoi on August 9. The signing is part of results of the France visit by Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung in June 2018. Accordingly, the two sides will set up a team tasked with implementing activities regarding the survey and pre-feasibility study on the building of the market, and then move to next cooperation steps. Ly Son Islands break Japan market
The island district of Ly Son in the central province of Quang Ngai has exported 500 tonnes of purple onion – a unique farm product of the island – to Japan. It marks the first time a Japanese company has put in an order for farm produce from the island this year. Director of the Ly Son Island Company Nguyen Van Dinh said that purple onion will be harvested and exported from June to December this year. Dinh said the product has to meet the high requirements of the Japanese market, which means passing strict examinations and gaining a certification of origin before shipping to the country. He said farmers in the island have been successful in gradually applying safe farming techniques and have joined value chains with high productivity, making an attractive price for export. The demand for eggs is rising, with some companies wanting to boost production for export, Photo: Le Toan Ba Huan JSC recently made a splash when receiving $32.5 million worth of investment from VinaCapital’s Vietnam Opportunity Fund (VOF). According to Pham Thi Huan, chairwoman of Ba Huan, with additional capital from VinaCapital, Ba Huan is developing a poultry processing plant worth VND400 billion ($17.56 million) in Ben Luc district in the southern province of Long An. The project is slated to be inaugurated in April or May this year. The company will also expand two poultry projects in Long An’s Thanh Hoa and Duc Hoa districts, with a VND300 billion ($13.17 million) investment from VinaCapital. The expansion is expected to raise Ba Huan’s egg production capacity by 20-30 per cent. Huan said that the egg supplier currently has a local capacity of one million eggs per day. Trade promotion in Viet Nam is facing many difficulties as many importers, such as the US, China, Japan and the European Union, were now protecting their own farm production. Tran Van Cong, deputy director of the Agro Processing and Market Development Authority under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), made the statement at a trade counsellors’ meeting in Ha Noi on February 8 to discuss strategies for enhancing farm exports. The agricultural sector targeted a growth rate of about 3 per cent and export revenues of US$40 billion in 2018. The quality and food safety standards in these countries have become stricter.
