Ho Chi Minh City authorities held a meeting on February 6 with overseas Vietnamese who have returned home to welcome the Lunar New Year festival (Tet). At the meeting, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong briefed the overseas Vietnamese on the city’s socio-economic achievements and hailed their contributions to the southern hub by conducting business, transferring technologies, and making recommendations to Ho Chi Minh City. FMCG forecasted to grow fast during Lunar New Year festivities
With increasing income and a newfound hunger for better living quality, Vietnamese consumers are shopping more and more. They are no longer considered as the highest savers anymore, as they are ready to spend much on consumption, tourism, and household appliance goods.According to a survey produced by Nielsen, after essential living expenses, Vietnamese consumers are ready to spend on tourism, shopping, new hi-tech gadgets, and other entertainment services. The high growth potential of the economy and increasing consumption demand are expected to boost FMCG at the end of 2017 and in the first month of 2018.The results of Nielsen’s Market Pulse research showed that FMCG grew by 5% in the second quarter of 2017 in Vietnam, and 5.8% in the third quarter. This figure was forecasted at 6-7% in the fourth quarter. Petrol prices remain unchanged ahead of Lunar New Year
The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Finance announced that the prices of E5 are not higher than VND18,672 per litre, and those of diesel 0.05S and kerosene should not be higher than VND15,959 per litre and VND14,560 per litre, respectively. The changes took effect from 15:00 on February 3. Meanwhile, the two ministries also decided to adjust the price stabilisation fund for E5 bio-fuel at VND1,141 per litre while the use of the fund for diesel was VND678 per litre. The Ministries of Industry-Trade and Finance conducted a review of fuel prices every 15 days to adjust the prices in accordance with fluctuations on the world market. The average global price of petrol products during the last 15 days to February 3 was at US$78.039 per barrel for RON 92 and US$81.978 for diesel. Vietnam’s real estate agents offer huge Lunar New Year bonus
Nguyen Vu Cao, board chairman of Hanoi-based property firm Van Khang Phat, said his firm is expected to award its best manager a car worth VND3 billion ($130,000) as a Lunar New Year bonus. Meanwhile, best supervisors and sales staff of the company will be awarded tours valued at VND30-80 million ($1,320-3,520) each for the Lunar New Year, known as Tet in Vietnam, which will fall in less than a fortnight. Other employees will receive a month's salary, he said, adding the bonus this Tet is higher than that of last year. Pham Thanh Hung, CEO of Cen Group, said that his firm will spend tens of billions of Vietnamese dong worth of the firm’s shares on bonuses for employees. PVOIL to run Lunar New Year promotion
A PVOIL station (Photo: www.pvoil.com.vn) Hanoi (VNA) – PetroVietnam Oil Corporation (PVOIL) has announced Lunar New Year promotional prices at its more than 540 petrol stations nationwide for February 1 and 2. PVOIL customers can buy E5 RON 92 fuel and diesel oil lower than the listed prices by 500 VND per litre. Similar programmes were implemented in 2016 and 2017. PVOIL’s promotional campaign for Lunar New Year will also give away 1,320 coach tickets for disadvantaged students who wish to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Yen and Da Nang. PVOil said that all of its stations have replaced RON 92 with E5 bio-fuel since the beginning of the year. The sale of E5 at its stations reached 600-650cu.m per day, 70 percent of its total petrol sales. The corporation has 11 E5 mixing stations and is investing in other such facilities. Holiday bonuses show huge disparity as Lunar New Year nears in Vietnam
A manufacturing company in Ho Chi Minh City has announced it will award its best employees nearly VND950 million ($41,800) each as a Lunar New Year bonus, but another company in the city is planning on giving its workers just VND100,000 ($4.40). The Lunar New Year, known as Tet in Vietnam, will be upon us in less than a month, and once again companies’ bonus reports are being received with both cheers and tears. The southern metropolis, the country’s commercial center, stands at the top of this divide, but most cities and provinces across Vietnam have reported a similarly wide spectrum of bonuses. Following Saigon, Hanoi to bring back fireworks for Lunar New Year
Hanoi authorities have announced the inclusion of fireworks shows alongside cultural performances and sports activities in the capital's Lunar New Year, or Tet, 2018 celebration. After being absent last year, fireworks would return to multiple locations across the city on the Lunar New Year's Eve, which falls at midnight on February 16. Hanoi has tasked its military's High Command with drafting a detailed plan for the shows. In previous years' celebrations, Hanoi usually threw 30 fireworks shows across the city, with five big ones at Hoan Kiem Lake, Thong Nhat Park, Lac Long Quan Flower Garden, Van Quan Lake and My Dinh National Stadium. Indonesia repatriates Vietnamese fishermen ahead of lunar New Year

On January 6, 39 people of the group departed from the Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. Most of the leaving was held captivity on Indonesian islands as deponents at trials for their ship captains. A day earlier, 21 Vietnamese fishermen were repatriated. Eleven more will make their journey home on January 10. Tran Minh Cu, Counsellor of the Vietnamese Embassy, said more repatriation trips like these will be organised before the lunar New Year holiday.
