NEW YORK -- Myanmar’s military says it is ready to withstand sanctions and isolation after its Feb. 1 coup, a top United Nations official said on Wednesday as she urged countries to “take very strong measures” to restore democracy in the Southeast Asian nation. U.N. special envoy on Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, said 38 people died on Wednesday - the most violent day since the coup - as the military quelled protests. Schraner Burgener is due to brief the U.N. Security Council on Friday. Myanmar has been in chaos since the army seized power and detained elected government leader Aung San Suu Kyi and much of her National League for Democracy (NLD) leadership. The NLD won an election in November in a landslide, which the military said was fraudulent. The election commission said the vote was fair. Vietnam confirms seven new Covid-19 cases
All five local cases, numbered 2478-2482, were already quarantined when detected with the novel coronavirus. The two imported cases, patients 2476 and 2477, are women aged 23 in Ho Chi Minh City. They had been quarantined February 28 on entering the country via the Ha Tien International Border Gate in the southern province of Kien Giang. With three cases in the morning, Vietnam recorded 10 new cases Wednesday. The number of community transmissions since January 28 is now at 870, led by Hai Duong with 689 cases, followed by Quang Ninh (61), HCMC (36) and Hanoi (35). Ten of the localities have gone nearly 20 days without any local transmission, including HCMC and Quang Ninh, and the latter reopened its Van Don International Airport Wednesday. UNESCO-recognised Hue relic site attracts visitors on Lunar New Year’s Day
Due to the complicated developments of the fresh coronavirus outbreak, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center has postponed several royal court games, along with cultural and artistic activities. Coming to the site, visitors are required to abide by COVID-19 preventive measures such as wearing face masks and washing their hands with sanitiser. As part of the occasion, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center is free to all domestic guests who visit Hue’s relic site from the first to the third day of the Lunar New Year. A local visitor to the Hue Imperial Citadel (Dai Noi) notes that it is common for people to visit traditional places such as pagodas or temples during the opening days of the Lunar New Year. The two imported cases are local residents of HCMC, both aged 23. The two women entered the Ha Tien international border gate in Kien Giang on February 28 and were quarantined upon their arrival.
