Speaking at an online meeting on February 24, Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said that the new Covid-19 strain has become the fifth variant to be reported in Vietnam. Deceased Japanese expert infected with new virus variant: Health Minister A Japanese expert who died in Hanoi on February 13 has been infected with a new variant strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, said Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long. Long announced the results of the expert’s genome sequencing at a meeting of permanent Cabinet members in Hanoi on February 24. He did not reveal specifically but said this was the first time the new strain has been detected in Vietnam. The strain, he said, has circulated mainly in the Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan (China), and India. According to the minister, Japan, the deceased expert’s home country, has yet to record this strain. To scientists, the strain it not highly transmissible, but the extent of its aggravation is not clear, said Long. Dead Japanese expert infected with new 20C-coronavirus variant

The new 20C-coronavirus variant has been circulating mainly in South Korea, Sri Lanka, India, and Taiwan, said the Ministry of Health. According to police officers’ investigation, the Japanese man, born in 1967, entered Vietnam on January 17 and was immediately under quarantine at a centralized isolation ward in Ward 2 in Tan Binh District in Ho Chi Minh City. His two tests on January 17 and 31 were negative for Covid-19; accordingly, after finishing mandatory quarantine time, he was allowed to leave his quarantine facility in the city for Hanoi on a flight on February 1. He self-isolated in the hotel from February 1 till he was dead. Yesterday evening, the National Steering Board for Covid-19 Prevention and Control said that 11 new Covid-19 infection cases were reported on the day, all in the Northern Province of hai Duong. Growing concern over overload on Vietnam stock market
