The peak of saltwater intrusion will occur during high tide on March 12 -16, March 27 – April 1, April 9 – 14 and April 24 – 30. The delta, the country’s largest rice, fruit and seafood producer, is facing a higher than normal level of saltwater intrusion from the sea through river mouths in the ongoing dry season. However, it is not as severe as the level of the previous dry season. Forests in the region, which includes the provinces of Lam Dong, Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Kon Tum and Dak Nong, face a high fire risk because of hot weather. At the beginning of the dry season , the provinces instructed localities to establish fire-prevention plans and strictly implement them in the dry season. In Dak Nong province, the Forest Protection Sub-department in September last year instructed localities and forest owners to set up prevention plans. The sub-department has organised forest fire prevention drills and more inspections. Canal renovation project proposed to prevent flooding at Ho Chi Minh City airport
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport is seeking approval for a VND513 billion (US$22,370) canal renovation project to deal with flooding at Tan Son Nhat International Airport and its vicinity. The municipal transport department has submitted the plan on renovating Hy Vong Canal in Tan Binh District to the People’s Council for ratification. The project is aimed at improving rainwater drainage at Tan Son Nhat International Airport and other areas along the canal. The target areas cover about 1,052 hectares. The plan will also prevent flooding at public works and residential areas as well as helping improve the local environment and urbanscapes. The renovated canal will be 1,821 meters long, while two roads, about 10 meters wide each, will be built along both sides of the canal.
