Auto support industries falling short
The positive results posted by Vietnamese manufacturers in support industries over the last 20 years have come mostly on the back of the development of the local motorcycle industry. Despite the government’s policies to limit the number of vehicles on Vietnam’s streets, there have been many opportunities in place for manufacturers to grow, according to Ms. Truong Thi Chi Binh, Vice Chairwoman and Secretary General of the Vietnam Association of Supporting Industries (VASI). “They are willing to be involved further in automobile support industries once volumes in the industry are sufficiently large, along with government support in terms of policies,” she said. Illustrative image (Photo: businesstimes) Singapore (VNA) – Southeast Asia’s GDP growth is likely to remain at 4.5 percent in 2020, amid high risks of a re-escalation in trade tensions between the US and China, according to the latest report produced by the British advisory firm Oxford Economics. Friction between the two countries remains high and the bulk of imposed tariffs are unlikely to be lifted anytime soon, said Sian Fenner, Oxford Economics lead Asia economist. The region has recorded sluggish performance in the third quarter of 2019, with its GDP growth rising only 4.5 percent year-on-year. Export-oriented economies have suffered the worst blow from the ongoing trade conflict, with Singapore only narrowly avoiding a technical recession in the third quarter of 2019. Following this, the team won their second round match against Indonesia on December 5. Despite the Vietnamese women’s team twice falling behind, they eventually fought back to record a 3-2 victory over their rivals. Following two strong victories, Vietnam have booked their ticket into the final of the competition.
