A woman uses her umbrella as she walks past collapsed bamboo scaffolding hanging from a building during Super Typhoon Mangkhut in Hong Kong on Sep 16, 2018. (Photo: AFP/Anthony Wallace) Typhoon Mangkhut, dubbed the "King of Storms" by Chinese media, made landfall in Haiyan town at 5pm, after wreaking havoc in Hong Kong and Macau and killing more than 50 people in the Philippines. Ports, oil refineries and industrial plants in Guangdong have been shut. Power to some areas was also reduced as a precaution. In Shenzhen, the electricity supply to more than 130,000 homes was cut at one point on Sunday. The storm has fuelled concern about sugar production in Guangdong, which accounts for a tenth of national output at about 1 million tonnes. China sugar futures rose last week on fears for the cane crop. Guangdong is also China's most populous province, with a population of more than 100 million. According to state media, two people were killed in Guangdong due to the typhoon as of 8pm on … [Read more...] about Super typhoon slams into China after pummelling Philippines, Hong Kong

September 15, 2018 by vnexpress Leave a Comment

Of the 25 deaths, six people were reportedly buried by landslides, a girl drowned and a security guard was crushed by a falling wall. "As we go forward, this number will go higher," Ricardo Jalad, head of the Philippines' national civil defence office, told reporters about the biggest storm of the year in the region. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), a U.S. Department of Defense agency responsible for issuing tropical cyclone warnings for the Pacific and Indian Oceans, said the typhoon will head towards southern China and make landfall early Monday. As the powerful storm left the Southeast Asian archipelago and barrelled towards densely populated Hong Kong, Philippine authorities began sending search teams to remote areas hit by communication and power outages, AFP reported Sunday. Mangkhut forced thousands to flee their homes and seek temporary shelter from powerful winds and heavy rains. Hong Kong, US airlines bend to China pressure over Taiwan listing

July 25, 2018 by vir Leave a Comment

A growing number of international airlines, including Qantas and Singapore Airlines, had already changed their website classifications of Taiwan to 'Taiwan, China' AFP/ROBYN BECK Taiwan is a self-ruling democracy but Beijing considers it part of its own territory, to be reunified by force if necessary, and is pushing to isolate the island on the international stage. China's Civil Aviation Administration sent notices to dozens of airlines around the world in April asking them to adhere to Beijing's standards when referring to Taiwan, setting a Wednesday deadline to make the changes to corporate websites. "To the foreign airlines which have undertaken the reforms, we give our approval," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily press briefing in Beijing, calling the changes "positive steps." He reiterated China's position that foreign enterprises must "respect our sovereign and territorial integrity, and our people's feelings." But Taiwan condemned what it called … [Read more...] about Hong Kong, US airlines bend to China pressure over Taiwan listing
