A man has been given capital punishment for robbing and murdering his co-worker in Ho Chi Minh City in 2018. The municipal People’s Court on Wednesday sentenced Nguyen Hoang Phi, 24, who hails from the southern province of Binh Phuoc, to death for murder and robbery. His accomplices, Nguyen Dien Tai and Tran Van Tu, both 21, each received an 18-year jail term for murder and robbery. Tai and Tu were under 18 years old when they committed the offenses. The fourth defendant, 19-year-old Vuong Minh Tuan, was condemned to one year and a half in prison for robbery but he was given a suspended sentence. Tuan was under 16 years old when he committed the violation. According to the indictment, Phi was an employee of a local security guard service company. Cu Chi proposes to convert 17,000 ha of agricultural land to other purposes
The proposal was made at a meeting between a delegation from Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee led by vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Ngo Minh Chau and Cu Chi District authorities on March 3. Other proposals at the meeting include the adjustment for 10 subdivisions along the Saigon River from eco agriculture areas into eco-urban areas, a target rate of population growth to 200,000 people in the district, an increase in the inter-district construction density to 35-40 percent with a goal of attracting investment. At the meeting, the People’s Committee of Cu Chi District informed that the district completed 15 out of 20 socio-economic targets in 2020. This year, Cu Chi strives to adopt 20 targets, including four economic targets, four urban environmental targets and 13 social ones. (Source: VNA) HCM City (VNA) - The Index of Industrial Production ( IIP ) in Ho Chi Minh City climbed 6 percent year-on-year in the first two months of 2021 despite a fall of 24.6 percent in February, according to the municipal Statistics Office. The office said the index in traditional industries fell 9.8 percent compared to the same period last year. Some saw a sharp plunge between January and February , including medicine production, water drainage and wastewater treatment, motorised vehicle production, and paper and paper product manufacturing. Several key industries, meanwhile, enjoyed a year-on-year increase in their production index, such as electronics manufacturing (32.4 percent), electrical device production (28 percent), the manufacture of products from metallic minerals (22.4 percent), chemical and chemical product manufacturing (10.8 percent), and food production and processing (9.8 percent). Four Vietnamese universities break into Quacquarelli Symonds global ranking
Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City and its Hanoi sister entered the 801-1000 band of the 2021 rankings, compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British firm specializing in overseas education, and released Thursday. Last year, both schools had entered the top 1000 in the global ranking. This year, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology made it into the list for the first time, placed in the 1001+ bracket along with HCMC-based Ton Duc Thang University. The list analyzes six factors including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio to compile the rankings that rate 1,011 universities from 80 countries and territories. One of Ho Chi Minh City’s private theatres is working to introduce young people to tuong or hat boi (classical drama), a Vietnamese traditional theatre genre that originated in the 17th century.
