In a document from the Ministry of Education and Trianing (MOET) to the local press, the ministry affirmed that in order to ensure fairness, publicity and transparency in choosing textbooks, the ministry has drafted a circular (which has been published on its website for public opinions) which stipulates that those who compile and inspect textbooks will not be allowed to become members of councils which have the right to choose textbooks for use. The fact that the Vietnam Education Publishing House and the HCM City Education and Training Department are joining hands to compile textbooks is the responsibility of involved parties and they need to explain this to MOET. Ho Chi Minh City university president faces allegation of waste building Christmas tree
The president of a university in Ho Chi Minh City has been accused of wastefulness building an artificial pine tree on the campus, whereas a university officer claims that both his school and alumni provide the fund for it. The school has allowed and supported the students in decorating the ‘smart pine tree’ for Christmas and New Year for the last four years, in line with its principles of education, according to Dr. Do Van Dung, president of the university. Vietnam’s obsession with academic medals is spoiling its talents
While Vietnam is hugely successful at international science competitions, experts are concerned the country’s education system might be headed in the wrong direction with its focus on tangible achievements rather than nurturing raw talents to become useful humans. All 38 Vietnamese students who participated in regional and international Olympiads in 2018 were medalists, including 13 gold medals, 14 silver medals and 11 bronze medals, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training. Between 2009 and 2012, Vietnam only managed to claim around 30 medals each year, with very few gold medals, but since 2013 Vietnam’s yearly medal count at science Olympiads has significantly improved to 35-40 medals, with an average of about ten gold medals each year, according ministry statistics. Most Vietnamese contestants are chosen from … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s obsession with academic medals is spoiling its talents
Tourists go grapes for Ninh Thuan gardens
Thai An Village in Vinh Hai Commune of Ninh Hai District is home to 540 households growing grapes on 182 hectares. Locals began experimenting with the fingernail grape from Japan two years ago hoping for a higher yield. A farmer sprays his crop. At the start of 2017, fingernail grapes were planted across 5,000 square meters. Today, they occupy 70,000 square meters (7 hectares). There are two main harvests per year, the first during the winter-spring transition and the latter at the end of summer into fall. The fruit itself can be harvested year-round. However, for quality purposes, planters adhere to strict procedures to avoid the October to November rainy season. This new variety of grapes has three colors - green, red and yellow. "The grape requires consistent maintenance, frequent pruning and removal of smaller berries for an even and uniform cluster," said farmer Nguyen Thi Kim Lien. Fingernail grapes have a sweet, succulent … [Read more...] about Tourists go grapes for Ninh Thuan gardens
