Viet Nam News by Nguyễn Khánh Chi A recent lunch date with my old friends from university turned into a stirring round-table discussion when one friend proposed that we all make a plan to travel together. As we envisioned a change of pace, time together and the chance to explore, everyone seemed excited—but one woman looked a bit concerned. “Does that mean we leave our kids and husband at home?” she asked in a low voice. “Yes!” “Yep!” “Why not?” the others jumped in. Vietnamese traditional family values dating back to the feudal period stipulate that housework is women’s responsibility. This view is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it leads to celebrations of Vietnamese women’s dedication and hard work for their families. On the other, it punishes Vietnamese women who dare to assert some purpose or passion in life outside of their home. The persistence of this view makes it hard for many women to … [Read more...] about Women take a break from family for travel: Why not?
Two foreigners living in and outside Vietnam recalled their cozy memories with the Lunar New Year, or Tet in Vietnamese. 'Starting afresh' I’ve witnessed ten Tet since I started living here. In the early years I went to the fireworks and partied with friends in the expat bars around Hoi An. Often I would meet people I hadn’t seen for months as I tend to live quietly but was also busy with teaching. In the more recent years as I had some dogs as pets, I tended to stay at home or take the dogs for walks during the holiday evenings because it’s so calm, peaceful and lovely to see how people have decorated their houses. I like the idea of “starting afresh’ – throwing out old things, cleaning up and yet, remembering their ancestors. I’ve lost both my parents in the last two years so this has been on my mind. I admire the devotion to the family, helping out with the Tet chores and working for the parents while they do stuff for Tet. I like the … [Read more...] about Tet is the time for family, friends in Vietnam
“Family is rice with fish sauce”; “Family is a loving mother”; “Family is the baby’s cries”; “Family is Ipad”, “Family is being scolded”. Those are some of the thousand thoughts of pupils from grade 4 to 6 collected by Nguyen Huong Linh, La Thanh Ha, Nguyen Thi Ha Lan, Duong Thuy Ly, and Nguyen Ngoc Mai Tram during their journey to 7 Vietnamese provinces. Sharing an interest in social work, the five girls started a non-profit project called “Every family is great” last October. The project aims to provide children with perspectives on differences and variety of families. Huong Linh, one of the founders, said the topic of family was inspired by her own childhood. “My parents separated when I was in grade 4, but neither of them gave me any explanation of the situation,” Linh said, “I felt hurt for a very long time until I grew up and figured it out by myself. Then I realized … [Read more...] about Every family is great!

VietNamNet Bridge – Mr. Bui Ngoc Thai puts on his plastic gloves and carefully mixes the thin layers of lean pork meat, lard and skin with some salt, MSG and thinh, the golden roast rice grounded into a brownish powder. The pleasant fragrance of thinh started to fill the room. His family’s workshop in Dan Phuong District, 20km west of Hanoi, is less than 100 square meters. But it produces a special delicacy—nem Phung—that regularly travels by air, train and bus to anywhere on earth where Vietnamese people are living. In his high-ceilinged country home across the street from the workshop, Mr. Thai recalled how his grandfather used to make his nem at a cart stop eatery serving travelers and commuters who stopped by.“My grandfather was born in 1890, the same year as President Ho Chi Minh,” he said. “He sold gio (steamed pork jambon) and cha (fried pork cakes) and nem in his eatery and became very successful.”Thanks to his grandfather’s … [Read more...] about A family treat that nurtures generations to come
