As children around the world prepare to enjoy summer when time off from school means spending their days doing what kids love, Vietnamese children are ‘enjoying’ their 'break' in a more academic manner. Officially, schools in Vietnam commence on the fifth day of September every year and end around late May or early June, which means students are supposed to have at least two and a half months of summer vacation. In reality, however, few children are lucky enough to enjoy a full school-free summer break, as most Vietnamese parents are aware not to let their kids get rusty on their schoolwork or they may fall behind their peers when the new school year starts. Following the PM’s decision, the municipal People’s Committee has assigned the Department of Information and Communications to work with other competent agencies to hold Vietnam Book Day annually. Thanks to related agencies’ efforts in building the book reading movement, the city has achieved much success. Deputy Director of the Department of Information and Communications said that according to the department’s plan, people’s committees in 24 districts have organized annual book reading-relating activities with various themes for children, seminars, story-telling exchanges and book collection for destitute kids. Kim Cheng, from San Diego, California, USA My husband and I have been living in Vietnam for over six years, and I've celebrated four memorable Christmases and New Year's holidays in Ho Chi Minh City. I remember my first Christmas in Vietnam. It was December 24, 2008 and Vietnam had just won the AFF Championship. Most of Le Duan Street and the area surrounding the Notre Dame Cathedral had thousands of motorbikes with fans cheering and waving Vietnamese flags. Then, just before midnight, there was a wave of silence. It was really cool to see a mass of people become so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. The weather in the city during December is similar to the weather in my hometown most of the year. This year, a small group of friends and I will have Christmas Eve dinner at Saffron restaurant. MUSIC & PERFORMANCES Hanoi- Non-Verbal Performance “WITHOUT SIGNAL!” Mar 30 and 31, 8 pm Youth Theater Vietnam, 11 Ngo Thi Nham, Hai Ba Trung District Directed by Mr Shuji Onodera who founded “Company Derashinera” on 2006. Their performances were based on the techniques of mime, which were much more like theatrical work than dance. The mime movement of their dance helped audiences “see” the invisible, and attracting audiences by all their own styles. The group performed in Vietnam for the first time in 2016. In September 2017, Onodera created “WITHOUT SIGNAL!” after taking part in a few dance workshops with some Vietnamese artists. The piece was premiered at Kanagawa Art Theater in Yokohama, Japan by 4 Japanese and 4 Vietnamese performers. The piece was inspired by the scenes on the streets of Vietnam.
