On Anniversary of Normalization: Leaders Create New Images of U.S.-Vietnam Relations
Vietnam, for Americans, is a series of images. The change in the relationship between the two erstwhile battlefield enemies is closely linked to the change in these images – a fascinating, yet laborious process of adapting mentally to the discovery that what one once believed about the other is no longer true.Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) described his mental voyage at an Asia Society event last month. He described three images of Vietnam, all surrounding a girl in an ao dai, the tight-fitting, national dress. First, she bikes to school on a rusty bicycle, with a cheap ballpoint pen and schoolbook, wearing a cheap polyester dress. In the next picture, she rides a motorbike, heading for English classes, which, she knows, will give her a heads-up in the emerging market economy that begins to engulf Vietnam. In the last mental picture, he sees a young woman, her ao dai expensive silk, with a laptop computer under her arm, getting out of a Ford Focus in front of an office building. There … [Read more...] about On Anniversary of Normalization: Leaders Create New Images of U.S.-Vietnam Relations
US Investments in Vietnam in 2008: Opportunities & Challenges
Vietnam - US: Important ProgressSince Vietnam and the US normalised relations, bilateral economic and trade ties have been continuously promoted and reached good results. After the enforcement of the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), trade revenue increased eight folds compared with 2001 before the agreement had taken effect. In 2007 bilateral trade turnover is estimated to reach US$12 billion. Currently, the US is the largest export market of Vietnam (with 23 per cent) and more than 1,000 American businesses are doing business in Vietnam. Also in 2007, the US was estimated to invest US$5.1 billion in 369 projects, ranking 6th out of 80 countries investing in Vietnam. Together with the dynamic economy, political stability, WTO entry and non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council; hosting APEC 14 heightened the position and reputation of Vietnam and helped attract more foreign investors, especially Americans, into the country. Auto industry tells Trump ‘We’re winning with NAFTA’
Major automakers, suppliers and auto dealers launched a new coalition on Tuesday to urge U.S. President Donald Trump not to withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement. Auto trade associations representing major carmakers including General Motors Co, Toyota Motor Corp, Volkswagen AG, Hyundai Motor Co and Ford Motor Co are part of the coalition dubbed "Driving American Jobs." The group is behind an advertising campaign to convince the White House and voters that the NAFTA pact has been crucial in boosting U.S. automotive sector production and jobs. Trump has threatened to withdraw from the trade agreement among the United States, Canada and Mexico, which is heavily utilized by automakers that have production and supply chains spread across the three countries. In the most recent round of talks to renegotiate NAFTA last week, Trump proposed changes to the rules of origin for autos, which are used to determine how much of a vehicle is made in a certain place. The proposed rules … [Read more...] about Auto industry tells Trump ‘We’re winning with NAFTA’
Trump pulls US out of Pacific trade deal, loosening Asia ties
U.S. President Donald Trump formally withdrew the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal on Monday, distancing America from its Asian allies, as China's influence in the region rises. Fulfilling a campaign pledge to end American involvement in the 2015 pact, Trump signed an executive order in the Oval Office pulling the United States out of the 12-nation TPP. Trump, who wants to boost U.S. manufacturing, said he would seek one-on-one trade deals with countries that would allow the United States to quickly terminate them in 30 days "if somebody misbehaves." "We're going to stop the ridiculous trade deals that have taken everybody out of our country and taken companies out of our country," the Republican president said as he met with union leaders in the White House's Roosevelt Room. The TPP accord, backed heavily by U.S. business, was negotiated by former Democratic President Barack Obama's administration but never approved by Congress. Obama had framed TPP, which … [Read more...] about Trump pulls US out of Pacific trade deal, loosening Asia ties
Trump, lone survivor in Republican White House race, now must unify party
Anointed the presumptive nominee after winning Indiana on Tuesday and driving his closest rival, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, from the race, the 69-year-old New York billionaire planned to set up a vice presidential selection committee and step up efforts to seek unity among a wider group of Republicans ahead of the Nov. 8 election. Trump's win in Indiana cleared the way for him to prepare for a likely general election match-up against Democrat Hillary Clinton. The former secretary of state lost the Indiana primary to tenacious challenger U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, but remains on course to become her party's nominee. Trump told NBC News he would probably work with the Republican National Committee to raise about $1 billion for the general election campaign. Kasich, the Ohio governor, had stayed in the race in hopes of persuading Republicans to choose him as the nominee at a contested convention in July. He ended his campaign as a clear path emerged for Trump to amass the delegates needed … [Read more...] about Trump, lone survivor in Republican White House race, now must unify party
