Construction of the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge spanning the Saigon River to link District 1 with District 2 (now part of Thu Duc City) started in 2015. The 1.4 kilometers long, six lane bridge would connect with the Thu Thiem New Urban Area. Being built at a cost of nearly VND3.1 trillion ($134.9 million), the project was originally scheduled for completing in 2018. As of last year, work on the project was 70 percent complete but construction on certain sections in District 1 continues to face delays since some of the required land belongs to the Ministry of National Defense. The cable-stayed bridge, with its main tower rising 113 meters and leaning towards Thu Thiem, is supposed to become an architectural highlight on the river with an artistic lighting design. Seventh Japan-Vietnam Festival opens in HCM City
The seventh Japan-Vietnam Festival (JVF) opened at the September 23 Park in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 on April 17 with a host of activities. Addressing the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Vo Van Hoan said he believes that the event will bolster understanding between the countries, and create more cooperation chances in education, trade, investment and tourism. Japan is the third largest trade partner of HCM City and the fifth leading investor of the city. The southern hub has formed ties with seven Japanese localities. Takebe Tsutomu, head of the organising board on the Japanese side said the holding of the JVF after a suspension of more than one year demonstrated efforts by both countries in promoting the bilateral relations. Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy made the suggestion at a recent working session with the HCM City People’s Committee regarding the implementation of a national strategy on AI research, application and development by 2030. He underlined that to promote AI development, the information and communications sector needs to create a market for AI products while the education sector must focus on appropriate training. Collapsed trees after heavy rain causes traffic gridlock in HCM City
The heavy rains on early Friday morning flooded Saigon, causing many trees to collapse. As reported by VietNamNet, the rain started at about 1 AM and lasted for hours, causing severe flooding in many areas in Ho Chi Minh City, such as Thu Duc city, District 12, Binh Thanh District and others. Thunderstorms and gale winds toppled several trees and broke their branches during the heavy rain. At about 5 AM, a big, old banyan tree was uprooted and fell on the intersection of Truong Chinh street and Nguyen Van Qua street. The severe weather also broke branches of many tall trees on Truong Chinh – Cong Hoa street. Fortunately, these incidents happened when the street was empty, so no one was injured. HCM City is among of the largest crocodile farming localities in the south with around 200,000 of the reptiles being farmed mostly in Districts 12 and Hoc Mon.
