Species of newfound turtle yet to be confirmed
A turtle believed to be of the same species as the one that lived in Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi was found in the Dong Mo Lake outside the city in 2007. (Photo courtesy of biologist Ha Dinh Duc) Hanoi (VNA) - A new turtle with an appearance similar to that of the turtle that lived in Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi have been found. But according to an expert, it is yet to be confirmed if they are of the same species. ATP considered this “a ground-breaking discovery” since the last turtle that lived in Hoan Kiem Lake – one of the last of the Yangtze giant softshell turtles, belonging to the species Rafetus swinhoei – died in January 2016. The species now has just three living specimens, two in China and one in a lake outside Hanoi. If the turtle found by ATP is of … [Read more...] about Species of newfound turtle yet to be confirmed
Behind enemy lines: Vietnam’s female spies who helped change the war
By day Nguyen Thi Hoa sold conical hats on the streets of Hue in southern Vietnam, at night she funneled secrets to North Vietnam army handlers who were poised to launch an audacious assault on the city that would reshape the Vietnam War. Hoa was part of the Perfume River squad, a top-secret female combat unit formed in 1967 and bound by the North Vietnam's propaganda slogan: "When the enemy comes to your home, even the women should fight". Deployed deep in enemy territory, the covert 11-strong unit played an instrumental role in the 1968 Tet Offensive despite most of them being in their teens. The offensive, whose 50th anniversary will be marked on January 31 with an official ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City, swung U.S. public opinion decisively away from the anti-communist fight, ultimately leading to the American pullout. Women were integral to the North's battle against American "foreign invaders", working mainly in non-combat roles for most of the war as spies and guides, … [Read more...] about Behind enemy lines: Vietnam’s female spies who helped change the war
Senior Vietnamese citizen shoos tourist from floating dock
Social media has reverberated over the last few days with a video featuring a disagreement between a middle-aged Vietnamese woman and a foreign tourist who was prevented from taking photos on the elderly woman’s floating dock on a beautiful man-made lake in northern Vietnam. The lake, in Thuy Nguyen District, Hai Phong, the second largest city in northern Vietnam, was built after a quarry was dug as a source of raw construction material. Approximately fifty acres in size, or twenty five football fields, and surrounded by limestone hills, which lend it its azure hue, the location continually lures tourists with its limpid water and scenic beauty. In the footage, published on January 22, an elderly female vendor attempts to shoo a foreign visitor who is taking photographs on the dock. Waving a piece of cloth at the tourist, her attempt to explain her issue is to little avail and she continues to try and push the woman away. The woman reacts by defending herself and continuing to … [Read more...] about Senior Vietnamese citizen shoos tourist from floating dock
