Cham ethnic minority group’s pottery on display
Artefacts displayed at the event (Photo: VNA) Ninh Thuan (VNA) – A collection of over 350 pottery artefacts dating back to the 14th-19th century of the Cham ethnic minority group are being displayed at an exhibition that opened in the south central province of Ninh Thuan on December 8. The objects, including ceramic vases and tea pots, were collected by Thai Hung Lam from Da Lat city in the Central Highland province of Lam Dong. Ho Si Son, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ninh Thuan province, said the collection is special in both quantity and quality with historical and artistic values. This year Phu La households have a more bustling Tet atmosphere. They are tidying up houses and hamlet lanes and to make chung, square sticky rice, and giay, round sticky rice, cakes, the two most important cakes in a Tet feast. Despite economic difficulties, each Phu La family plans to wrap around 20 cakes this year hoping for a prosperous year. A number of ethnic minority group farmers in the central province of Quang Ngai have been plunged into heavy debts by succumbing to loan sharks with extremely high interest rates Residents of Cor ethnic minority group in Tra Tho Commune, Tay Tra District were offered compensation sums of up to US$43,880 (approx VND1billion) after being relocated for the construction of Nuoc Trong Reservoir. At the seminar According to a report on policies for ethnic minorities in the 2011-2015 period, mountainous areas make up nearly three quarters of the country. They are home to 53 ethnic minority groups with nearly 12.3 million people, accounting for approx. 14.2 percent of the population of the country. To date, these areas remain the most impoverished of the country. The rate of poverty and hunger is much higher here than the average national rate, with a big gap between the rich and the poor, a low literacy rate, and several traditional cultures being at risk of being lost to oblivion. The program will feature the participation of over 100 people from 11 different ethnic minority groups, including Tay, Dao, Mong, Thai, Muong, Kho Mu, Ta Oi, Co Tu, Raglai, E De and Khmer.
