Children in the US are drawing more women scientists than in previous decades, according to a new study. The Draw A Scientist Test has been used in schools around the world -- Photo: VASILIA CHRISTIDOU The "Draw A Scientist" test has been administered by sociologists in various studies since the 1960s. Researchers at Northwestern University, US, analysed five decades of the test. When asked to draw a scientist, less than one per cent of children in the 1960s and 1970s drew a woman. This rose to 28% between the 1980s and present day. However, children are still far more likely to draw a traditionally male figure when asked to depict a scientist. Children tend to depict scientists in lab coats and with technical equipment -- Photo: VASILIA CHRISTIDOU "The effect ... increased over age as children became more connected to their world and became more aware of the male dominance of science," Prof Alice Eagly, a co-author on the study, told BBC News. Bali's palm-fringed Kuta beach has long been a favorite with tourists seeking sun and surf, but nowadays its golden shoreline is disappearing under a mountain of garbage. Plastic straws and food packaging are strewn between sunbathers, while surfers bobbing behind the waves dodge waste flushed out from rivers or brought in by swirling currents. "When I want to swim, it is not really nice. I see a lot of garbage here every day, every time," Austrian traveler Vanessa Moonshine explains. "It's always coming from the ocean. It's really horrible," she adds. Often dubbed a paradise on earth, the Indonesian holiday island has become an embarrassing poster child for the country's trash problem. The archipelago of more than 17,000 islands is the world's second biggest contributor to marine debris after China, and a colossal 1.29 million metric tons is estimated to be produced annually by Indonesia. The waves of plastic flooding into rivers and oceans have been causing problems for years -- … [Read more...] about Bali declares ‘garbage emergency’ amid sea of waste
UNESCO has given feedback about Vietnam’s ca tru file. Director of the Music Institute, Le Toan, talked about the compilation of the ca tru file and how to restore this art. We had to stop compiling the ca tru file for a long time in 2006 because UNESCO changed the form of recognition of intangible hertigages. Did we have to amend the file much to fit new criteria? We had been compiling the file for over one year when UNESCO changed its criteria for choosing heritages. We had to add more information to the file, but the old data was not redundant. There is a controversy about the birth of ca tru. Some say that it appeared in the 11th century and others say in the 15th century. What is the Music Institute’s opinion about it? Historical documents dating back to the 11th century have some words about ca tru but they are unclear. It was not until the 15th century when ca tru flourished to become a type of art. The most important part of the file is the … [Read more...] about How to restore ca tru?
