HCM City launches blood donation campaign ahead of Tet
People go to blood donation event (Illustrative photo: VNA) HCM City (VNA) – Ho Chi Minh City on December 28 launched a voluntary blood donation campaign and Xuan Hong (Red Spring) Festival of 2019, amidst a shortage in blood reserve for the upcoming Lunar New Year (Tet) festival. According to Director of the City Blood Transfusion and Haematology Hospital Phu Chi Dung, the city is in need of about 32,000 blood packs as stock for Tet. Doctor Dung said that the hospital’s blood bank supplies blood to over 100 hospitals in the city, providing about 600-800 packs to local health care facilities each day. The demand for blood in the city has increased by 10-20 percent every year. In 2018, 230,000 blood packs were used. The demand in 2019 is estimated at 260,000 packs. However, currently, the bank is keeping only 3,000 packs and needs another 32,000 packs from now to Tet, which is only about five weeks away. Viet Nam News HCM CITY — At least 30,000 units of blood are expected to be collected from volunteers at 26 provinces and cities in the country via an annual blood-donation campaign called Hành Trình Đỏ (Red Journey) 2018. The campaign will begin on June 14 when blood donors in the country will be honoured. It will last until July 15. Director of the NIHBT Bach Quoc Khanh said that during this time, there is a lack of blood available for use while blood demand in hospitals and health facilities often rises after Tet. Staff members of the NIHBT registered to donate on this occasion, he added, calling on agencies and organisations to take part in blood donation campaigns. The NIHBT needs a minimum of 1,500 units of blood daily for emergencies and medical treatment at 180 hospitals in Hanoi and northern provinces.
