At least seven killed in earthquake on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island
Jakarta (VNA) – At least seven people were killed and hundreds injured at a 6.2-magnitude earthquake which happened on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island early on January 15. Initial information from the country’s disaster mitigation agency showed that four people had died and 637 others were injured in Majene, while there were three fatalities and two dozen injured in the the neighbouring province of Mamuju. Thousands had fled their homes to seek safety when the quake hit just after 1 am local time on Friday morning, damaging at least 60 homes, the agency said. The epicentre of the quake was six kilometres northeast of Majene city at a depth of 10 kilometres. Pork prices fall as Vietnam increases imports
HCM City (VNS/VNA) - The imported pork and declining meat consumption have pushed pork prices down, helping stabilise the consumer price index. This month pork has been sold at the Hoc Mon wholesale market in Ho Chi Minh City for around 72,000 VND (3.17 USD) per kilogramme, 8,000 VND down from previous months, according to its management. Le Xuan Huy, deputy general director of the CP Livestock Joint Stock Company, said hog prices are down because of increased imports of both frozen pork and live pigs as well as lower demand. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first seven months of this year Vietnam imported more than 93,248 tonnes of pork, mainly from Canada, Germany, Poland, Brazil, the US, Spain, and Russia, 223 percent up from the same period in 2019.
