On Friday, a Vietnam Airlines flight was scheduled to depart from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi at 10 a.m. But at 9:40 a.m. Nguyen Thanh, her husband and three-year-old daughter had yet to pass the security checkpoint, prompting airline staff to "rescue" the family ahead of departure. Arriving at the airport at 8 a.m., they completed check-in and medical declaration procedures, then queued up for an hour waiting to pass the security checkpoint. Another Vietnam Airlines flight was scheduled to leave HCMC for Cam Ranh at 10:10 a.m., about 30 minutes before departure, many passengers were still at the security checkpoint. "My family was about to go on a weekend trip - I was surprised the airport was so crowded. I've only witnessed such scenes during the Tet holiday," a passenger named Nguyen Sy commented. A representative of Tan Son Nhat airport, Vietnam's largest, said overcrowding got worse closer to the weekends. Vietnam shows best corruption control in public sector in 10 years
The launch of the 2020 PAPI report in Hanoi on April 14 (Photo: baotainguyenmoitruong.vn) Hanoi (VNA) – The control of corruption in the public sector last year showed the best performance in a decade, since the Vietnam Provincial Governance and Public Administration Performance Index (PAPI) survey was first conducted. The 2020 PAPI report, released on April 14, indicated that in 2020, the percentages of respondents seeing bribes as necessary for jobs in state agencies, health-care services at district-level public hospitals, land use right certificates, fair treatment by primary school teachers, and the granting of construction permits continued declining since 2016, the first year of the 2016-2021 government term. As many as 18 provinces and cities made significant progress in the control of corruption in the public sector last year compared to 2019. Localities directed to continually monitor COVID-19 situation
Addressing an online meeting with representatives from 63 provinces and cities, and their health sectors on accelerating COVID-19 prevention and vaccination efforts, Long warned that Vietnam is in danger of experiencing another outbreak. He stressed that controlling the pandemic this year will be very difficult for all countries, not just Vietnam. Vietnam has gone 21 straight days with no new cases of domestic transmission, he said, while also noting that the situation remains complex in the world and the region. The country is still organising commercial flights to bring Vietnamese citizens home, he added. The Ministry of Health - the standing agency of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control - will continue to strengthen its direction as well as inspection and supervision of high-risk areas. He underlined the urgent need to prevent illegal travel in border areas and to strictly tackle violations. Regarding vaccinations, Long said the ministry has … [Read more...] about Localities directed to continually monitor COVID-19 situation
Divestment slow off the blocks for banks
SOEs must complete the sale of shares within four months, photo Le Toan State-owned lender Agribank has been stuck for years with divestment efforts because its real estate assets could not be approved by the Ministry of Finance due to their large size and complex procedures. “At the end of last year, the Ministry of Finance also made a comprehensive assessment on the equitisation goal of state-owned enterprises. Specifically, only about 28 per cent of enterprises were equitised, which means that nearly three-quarters did not meet the plan. The main issue is that many large corporations’ land use rights remain unclear, as can be seen in the cases of VNPT and Agribank,” explained Chu Manh Hung, deputy head of the Equitisation Department at Agribank. “Since the equitisation plan during 2016-2020 has not been completed yet, Agribank will continue carrying out this task for the 2021-2025 period,” he added. “However, there are still major roadblocks hampering the process, … [Read more...] about Divestment slow off the blocks for banks

Among the affected, 540,000 lost their jobs during the period while 3.1 million had their working hours reduced or took unpaid leave, with 6.5 million others reporting reduced incomes, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported Friday. The country's labor force shrunk by 1.1 million against the previous quarter to 51 million, the report stated. Pham Hoai Nam, head of the GSO's department of population and labor statistics, blamed the dark picture on the resurgence of Covid-19 before the Lunar New Year, the country's biggest festival. Vietnam encountered a new wave of Covid-19 on Jan. 28 in what the government said was caused by the U.K.-originated variant. In February, many areas in Vietnam were placed under lockdown as authorities raced against time to contain the spread of the virus. The service sector was hit hardest by the crisis with 20.4 percent of workers affected, followed by the processing and manufacturing industries, along with agriculture. The average monthly … [Read more...] about 9.1 million Vietnamese workers affected by Covid-19 in Q1
