Nguyen Ngoc Dong and Nguyen Nhat received reprimands from Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Wednesday while Nguyen Van Cong got an official warning. Nguyen Hong Truong has been retrospectively stripped of his position as Deputy Minister of Transport for the 2011-15 and 2016-17 terms. The Communist Party had meted out similar punishments to them in July. According to the Communist Party's secretariat, Truong was responsible for violations committed by the ministry's Party Affairs Committee during his time as a member of the committee, deputy minister and head of the ministry's Steering Committee for Enterprise Innovation and Development. He was also found to be personally responsible for approving enterprise values and equitization plans for many companies and units under the transport ministry and seeking the government's approval for equitization plans, none of which was within his powers and were also in contravention of the law. Finland picks youngest-ever prime minister
HELSINKI — Finland's Social Democrats elected a 34-year-old former transport minister to the post of prime minister on Sunday, making her the youngest head of government in the country's history. Sanna Marin narrowly won Sunday's vote to replace outgoing leader Antti Rinne, who resigned on Tuesday after losing the confidence of the coalition partner Centre Party over his handling of a postal strike. "We have a lot of work to do to rebuild trust," Marin told reporters on Sunday night, while deflecting questions about her age. "I have never thought about my age or gender, I think of the reasons I got into politics and those things for which we have won the trust of the electorate." At 34, Marin also becomes one of the world's youngest state leaders, ahead of Ukraine's prime minister Oleksiy Honcharuk, who is currently 35. Former PM Antti Rinne had headed Finland's centre-left five-party coalition since June, and Marin's appointment is unlikely to lead to significant policy changes … [Read more...] about Finland picks youngest-ever prime minister

Communist Party of Vietnam expels two former information ministers
The decisions to revoke Party memberships of Nguyen Bac Son and Truong Minh Tuan were taken at a meeting of the Party's Central Committee Friday, 11 days after the Central Inspection Committee, the Party's top watchdog, recommended the move. The two former information ministers had already been dismissed from their Party positions last year. Their explusion from the Party came seven months after both were arrested and placed under criminal investigation for violations related to management and use of public capital. They were accused of receiving bribes in the illegal acquisition of private pay TV firm Audio Visual Global JSC (AVG) by state-owned telecom giant Mobiphone in 2016. Government inspectors later concluded that the deal had violated public investment laws and caused an estimated loss of about VND7 trillion ($300 million) to the state budget. Son, then serving as the information minister, directly approved MobiFone's acquisition of AVG against regulations and asked … [Read more...] about Communist Party of Vietnam expels two former information ministers
Minister calls for making distinction in regulating ride-hailing, taxi firms
In a letter to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung said there should be a new legal framework for ride-hailing services like Grab and Go-Viet so that technology could bring social and economic benefits as seen in countries like the U.K., Singapore and Indonesia. While traditional taxi firms provide a whole gamut of the transport services, ride-hailing services only provide a part and so should be managed differently, he explained. He proposed a new definition in the law for ride-hailing firms as companies which provide platforms to connect drivers and passengers using technology. Vietnamese officials have been scratching their heads about how to manage ride-hailing services since traditional taxis are crying foul, claiming their business is being damaged by new competitors like Grab. In its latest version of a bill on managing these services, the Ministry of Transport has tightened conditions for ride-hailing firms. They … [Read more...] about Minister calls for making distinction in regulating ride-hailing, taxi firms
